Former BJP Leader Anamika Sharma’s Boyfriend Arrested in Alleged Gang Rape of Minor Daughter

The serene facade of Haridwar has been shattered by a deeply disturbing incident, as a former BJP leader Anamika Sharma and her boyfriend have been arrested in connection with the alleged gang rape of her 13-year-old daughter. The case, which came to light this week, has sent shockwaves through the community, highlighting a betrayal of trust that is almost unfathomable.

Anamika Sharma, formerly a prominent figure heading the BJP Mahila Morcha’s Haridwar district unit, and her boyfriend, Sumit Patwal, were apprehended on Wednesday from a local hotel. Their arrest followed a harrowing revelation by the young victim to her father on Tuesday, prompting an immediate police complaint. A subsequent medical examination tragically confirmed the sexual assault.

According to Haridwar SSP Pramendra Dobhal, a case has been registered under stringent sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) including 70 (2) (gang-rape), 351(3) (criminal intimidation), 3(5) (criminal act by several persons in furtherance of common intention), and relevant provisions of the POCSO Act.

The details emerging from the investigation are profoundly disturbing. Police allege that the minor was subjected to repeated gang rapes by Sumit Patwal and his accomplice, Shubham (who remains at large), between January and March of this year. These horrific acts reportedly occurred across Haridwar, Agra, and Vrindavan. Even more chilling is the accusation that these crimes transpired with Anamika Sharma’s consent and, at times, in her presence. The perpetrators are also said to have threatened the child with her father’s life if she dared to speak out.

Anamika Sharma had reportedly separated from her husband and was living with Sumit Patwal in his hotel. As the gravity of the allegations surfaced, the BJP swiftly moved to strip Anamika Sharma of her primary party membership. Party sources have emphasized that she had not held any official party post since August 2024, aiming to distance the organization from such abhorrent conduct.

The community now grapples with the fallout of this heartbreaking incident, as authorities intensify their search for Shubham, the second alleged perpetrator.
