Akriti Sutar had returned to work after taking leave following her marriage, hosted a small gathering with colleagues, and spoke cheerfully with her mother before heading home. Within just a few hours, the 28-year-old sales executive was found dead inside a residential society in Delhi’s Lodhi Colony, leaving her family devastated and raising serious questions about the circumstances surrounding her death.
The shocking incident unfolded on Saturday evening when Akriti’s body was discovered on the ground inside Palika Kunj, a residential complex in Lodhi Colony, nearly 10 kilometres away from her home in Pushp Vihar. Initial indications suggest that she fell from a building, but investigators are yet to determine whether the death was accidental, suicidal, or the result of foul play.
Akriti, who worked as a Sales Executive with a private company in Chhatarpur, had resumed office earlier that day despite being on leave after her marriage. According to her family, she appeared to be in good spirits throughout the day. She reportedly organized a small party for her colleagues, an event that relatives believe reflected her positive state of mind rather than emotional distress.
Her family strongly disputes any suggestion that Akriti may have taken her own life. They argue that everything about her behaviour on Saturday pointed toward someone looking forward to returning to normal life after her wedding celebrations rather than someone battling depression.
Speaking about her final conversation, family members said Akriti called her mother at around 6 p.m. She spoke casually about the office gathering and mentioned that she was on her way home. According to relatives, nothing in her voice suggested fear, anxiety, or emotional turmoil.
The sequence of events that followed has become the central focus of the family’s concerns.
Akriti’s uncle, Mananjay Sutar, said the family received an unexpected phone call from her husband, Arastu Sikka, at around 8 p.m. He allegedly informed them that Akriti had gone missing. Approximately 90 minutes later, police contacted the family and informed them that a woman’s body had been recovered from Palika Kunj in Lodhi Colony.
The timeline has left relatives questioning how events unfolded between Akriti’s conversation with her mother and the discovery of her body. They believe several unanswered questions remain and insist that investigators thoroughly examine every detail.
Akriti’s younger brother, 24-year-old Amay Sutar, described his sister as mentally strong and determined. He rejected the possibility that she would end her own life under any circumstances.
“My sister was mentally very strong. She would never have taken such a step,” he reportedly said while urging authorities to conduct an impartial and detailed investigation.
The family’s allegations extend far beyond the events of Saturday evening.
According to relatives, Akriti had faced continuous harassment after marrying Arastu Sikka on April 24 this year. They alleged that her husband and his family repeatedly demanded ₹20 lakh as dowry and subjected her to intimidation and pressure soon after the wedding.
Family members further claimed that Arastu, who they say is unemployed, had threatened Akriti’s life on several occasions. They also alleged that the couple had a serious argument just two days before her death, adding another dimension to the ongoing investigation.
The couple had reportedly been in a relationship for nearly eight years before marrying earlier this year. Their long relationship has made the allegations even more startling, with relatives claiming that circumstances changed significantly after the marriage.
Dowry-related harassment remains a deeply sensitive issue in India despite strict legal provisions prohibiting the practice. Cases involving allegations of domestic abuse and dowry demands often require detailed forensic examination, witness statements, digital evidence, and financial records before investigators can establish whether criminal offences were committed.
At present, Delhi Police have not confirmed the exact cause of Akriti’s death. Officers have stated that the investigation remains open and that every possible angle is being examined. Investigators are expected to analyse forensic evidence, review CCTV footage from the area, question witnesses, and record statements from family members and others connected to the case.
The outcome of the investigation will determine whether the death resulted from suicide, an accident, or an alleged criminal act. Until then, police have urged caution against drawing premature conclusions while continuing to collect evidence.
For Akriti’s grieving family, however, the incident represents far more than an unexplained death.
