Indian Sailor Rakesh Chauhan’s Body Returned from Venezuela with Missing Organs

What began as a tragic report of an accidental death aboard a merchant vessel has now evolved into a deeply disturbing case that has left an entire family in Uttar Pradesh demanding answers and raised serious questions about the circumstances surrounding the death of an Indian sailor in Venezuela.

Indian Sailor Rakesh Chauhan's Body Returned from Venezuela with Missing Organs

Rakesh Chauhan, a merchant navy sailor from Deoria district in Uttar Pradesh, was serving aboard a ship near Venezuela when his family received devastating news on May 8 that he had died after allegedly falling on the vessel during duty hours. The information was conveyed to relatives as an unfortunate workplace accident, one of the many risks associated with life at sea for thousands of Indian sailors working across international waters.

For weeks, the grieving family waited for his mortal remains to be brought back to India. However, when the body finally arrived, relatives say they were confronted with disturbing signs that immediately triggered suspicion. According to family members, Chauhan’s body bore approximately 22 stitches, raising questions about whether medical procedures had been carried out before the body was repatriated.

The family’s concerns intensified after local authorities in Deoria ordered a second postmortem examination. The fresh medical examination reportedly revealed that several internal organs, including the brain, lungs, liver, kidneys and other body parts, were missing. The findings shocked relatives, who say they had never been informed that any organs would be removed or that any such procedure had been performed following his death overseas.

“We were told he died after falling on the ship, but nobody explained why his body had already been operated upon or why so many organs were missing,” family members reportedly said while seeking a detailed investigation into the case.

The allegations have now drawn attention from organizations representing seafarers and maritime workers in India. The Federation of Seafarers Union of India (FSUI), an organization associated with employees working aboard ships, has expressed concern over the circumstances surrounding Chauhan’s death and the condition in which his body was returned. The organization has reportedly suggested that the matter deserves a thorough investigation and that the possibility of a larger conspiracy cannot be ruled out at this stage.

Merchant navy employees often work in complex international jurisdictions where investigations into onboard deaths involve multiple agencies, shipping companies, foreign authorities and diplomatic channels. In such cases, families frequently depend on official communication provided by employers and overseas authorities, leaving them with limited access to independent information regarding incidents that occur thousands of kilometres away from home.

The case has also highlighted the emotional and legal challenges faced by families of Indian seafarers employed on international routes. When deaths occur in foreign waters, procedures involving autopsies, repatriation and documentation vary according to local laws and maritime regulations. Experts note that organ removal during postmortem examinations can occur under certain legal and medical circumstances, but such procedures are generally documented and communicated through official channels.

In Chauhan’s case, relatives insist that they received no prior explanation regarding the missing organs, making transparency and accountability central to their demands. The fresh postmortem findings have transformed what initially appeared to be an accidental death into a matter of public concern, with calls growing for authorities to establish the exact sequence of events aboard the vessel and determine whether standard international procedures were followed.

The administration in Deoria has already taken cognizance of the matter after the District Magistrate ordered the repeat examination. The findings are expected to play a crucial role in determining the next course of action and whether further investigation involving national agencies or diplomatic intervention becomes necessary.

For the Chauhan family, however, the issue extends beyond legal procedures and medical reports. They say they want clarity about what happened during Rakesh’s final moments, why his body returned in a condition they never expected, and whether the explanation given to them about a fall aboard the ship tells the complete story.

As investigators and authorities examine the claims, the case is likely to draw wider attention to the protections available to Indian seafarers working abroad and the mechanisms in place to ensure transparency whenever tragedy strikes far from home.
