Jalandhar Doctor Death Case: Eye Surgeon Booked After Government Doctor Wife Found Dead Amid ₹2.5 Crore Loan Allegations

Dr Meenakshi, a government doctor posted at a hospital in Kapurthala, was found hanging inside a room at her rented residence in Jalandhar on Wednesday. The shocking discovery has left family members devastated and raised troubling questions about the events that may have pushed the doctor into severe emotional distress.

Following complaints from her family, police registered a case against her husband, Dr Piyush, under Section 108 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which deals with abetment to suicide. Authorities have begun a detailed investigation and are awaiting the postmortem report, which is expected to play a crucial role in determining the exact cause and circumstances of her death.

What initially appeared to be a suspected suicide has evolved into a case involving allegations of prolonged mental harassment, physical abuse, financial irregularities, and an alleged extra-marital relationship. Family members claim these issues had deeply affected Meenakshi over the past several years and had significantly strained her marriage.

According to her relatives, the doctor had been living separately from her husband since July 2025 due to ongoing marital disputes. They said she had reached a stage where reconciliation no longer seemed possible and had started considering a formal divorce. As part of her plans to rebuild her life independently, she had reportedly begun searching for a separate home.

It was during this process, family members allege, that Meenakshi made a disturbing discovery. While approaching a bank regarding a housing loan, she allegedly learned that liabilities amounting to nearly ₹2.5 crore were already linked to her name. The revelation reportedly came as a complete shock.

Her family claims that she had no knowledge of these loans and had never authorized such borrowing. They further alleged that her signatures did not appear on the relevant loan documents. Subsequent checks of her financial records and CIBIL history allegedly revealed multiple liabilities, including loans associated with vehicles and business-related transactions.

Her father, Pramod Kumar, said the discovery left his daughter emotionally shattered. According to him, she struggled to understand how such a massive financial burden could be linked to her identity without her knowledge.

Family members believe the alleged loans became a major source of anxiety and psychological pressure during the final phase of her life. They argue that the financial shock came on top of years of personal turmoil and marital conflict, creating a situation that severely impacted her mental well-being.

Adding another layer to the controversy are allegations regarding Dr Piyush’s personal life. The family has accused him of maintaining an extra-marital relationship with a nurse employed at the same hospital where he worked. According to relatives, Meenakshi had grown suspicious about the relationship and later reviewed CCTV footage from the hospital premises, which they claim supported her concerns.

The footage has reportedly been handed over to investigators and is expected to form part of the evidence being examined by police. Authorities have not yet publicly commented on the contents of the footage or its relevance to the ongoing investigation.

The allegations do not end there. Meenakshi’s parents have accused her husband of subjecting her to physical violence and repeated harassment during their marriage. They claim there were several incidents in which she was assaulted and emotionally mistreated.

According to the family, there were occasions when Dr Piyush allegedly contacted them after disputes and expressed regret over his behaviour. The parents have also made a serious allegation that he attempted to kill their daughter by strangulation last year, a claim that investigators are likely to examine as part of the broader inquiry into the couple’s relationship.

As the investigation unfolds, relatives are questioning whether the case can be conclusively described as suicide before forensic findings are available. Speaking about their concerns, a family member said, “We are being told it is a suicide, but we do not know whether it was suicide or something else. The postmortem examination will reveal the truth.”

The case has attracted widespread attention because it involves two medical professionals and raises larger concerns about domestic abuse, financial exploitation, and mental health pressures that can exist behind seemingly successful public lives. Allegations of loans being taken in another person’s name, if proven, could also open up separate legal and financial investigations.

Police officials have stated that inquiries are ongoing and that all allegations made by the family are being examined. Investigators are expected to review financial records, electronic evidence, CCTV footage, and witness statements as part of their effort to establish a complete picture of the circumstances leading to Meenakshi’s death.

The family has demanded the immediate arrest of Dr Piyush and a thorough probe into both the alleged financial transactions and the claims of sustained harassment. Meanwhile, attempts by media organizations to contact the eye surgeon for his response remained unsuccessful at the time of publication.

As investigators await the postmortem findings, the death of Dr Meenakshi continues to raise difficult questions about accountability, trust, and the hidden struggles that can exist behind closed doors. For her grieving family, the search for answers has only just begun.
