His lean run for India was compounded by an underwhelming IPL 2026 campaign, prompting the management to explore fresh leadership options.
Among the biggest stories from the squad announcement is the inclusion of Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, whose rise has been nothing short of extraordinary. At just 15 years of age, the young batter has forced his way into the national setup after producing one of the most explosive seasons in IPL history.
Sooryavanshi finished IPL 2026 as the tournament’s leading run-scorer, accumulating 776 runs at an astonishing strike rate of 237.31. His fearless batting redefined aggressive cricket, as he smashed a tournament-record 72 sixes and collected multiple individual honors, including the Orange Cap, Emerging Player Award, and Most Valuable Player Award. Those performances left selectors with little choice but to fast-track him into international cricket.
The squad also welcomes back Harshit Rana, whose absence was keenly felt by both India and his IPL franchise. Rana had established himself as an important figure in India’s limited-overs plans before suffering a knee strain ahead of the 2026 T20 World Cup. The injury required surgery and a lengthy rehabilitation process. His return strengthens India’s pace attack and provides valuable lower-order batting depth.
Another notable selection decision involves leg-spinner Ravi Bishnoi, who has been preferred over Kuldeep Yadav despite Kuldeep being part of India’s recent T20 World Cup-winning squad.
