UP Police Reports Significant Drop in Crime, Strengthens Women Safety and Cyber Security: DGP Rajeev Krishna

Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh Director General of Police Rajeev Krishna on Sunday presented what he described as a significant transformation in the state’s law-and-order situation, claiming that crime has witnessed a substantial decline over the past seven to eight years due to sustained police action, technological upgrades and a strict zero-tolerance policy against criminals.

Addressing the media, the state’s top police officer said Uttar Pradesh Police has focused not only on controlling conventional crime but also on strengthening women’s safety, tackling cyber fraud and modernizing policing through the use of artificial intelligence and data-driven tools.

According to the DGP, one of the most notable achievements has been the high conviction rate secured by the police force. He said that under the state’s aggressive anti-crime strategy, more than 93 percent of identified offenders have been brought to justice. The figure, he noted, reflects improvements in investigation standards, evidence collection and coordination between police and prosecution agencies.

The state police have also intensified their campaign against organized crime syndicates. Rajeev Krishna revealed that action has been taken against 5,684 criminals under the Gangster Act. In addition, authorities have seized properties worth nearly ₹788 crore that were allegedly acquired through criminal activities. The move, officials believe, has not only targeted individual offenders but has also weakened the financial networks that often sustain organized crime groups.

The DGP emphasized that financial action against criminal organizations has emerged as a key component of law enforcement strategy in Uttar Pradesh. Rather than limiting action to arrests, the police have increasingly focused on disrupting illegal economic structures that allow gangs and habitual offenders to operate.

Women’s safety remained another major focus of the briefing. Rajeev Krishna said that the Mission Shakti campaign has received widespread public support since its launch and has become one of the most visible initiatives aimed at enhancing women’s security across the state. To make assistance more accessible, Mission Shakti Centres have been established in every police station.

These centres serve as dedicated points of contact for women seeking help, legal guidance or immediate intervention. Officials say the initiative has improved communication between women and law enforcement agencies while encouraging faster reporting of crimes. The DGP claimed that the state has witnessed a noticeable decline in crimes against women, attributing the trend to continuous awareness campaigns, proactive policing and institutional support mechanisms.

Beyond traditional law enforcement challenges, Uttar Pradesh Police has also been dealing with the rapid rise of cyber crime. As digital transactions become increasingly common, online frauds have emerged as a growing concern across the country. Rajeev Krishna said Uttar Pradesh has positioned itself among the leading states in cyber crime prevention and enforcement.

He disclosed that police authorities have managed to freeze more than ₹400 crore linked to cyber fraud cases. This intervention, according to officials, prevented significant financial losses for victims and demonstrated the state’s ability to respond quickly to online criminal activities. Specialized cyber units, digital investigation teams and enhanced technological capabilities have contributed to these outcomes.

The DGP said that public awareness campaigns have also played an important role in reducing vulnerability to cyber scams. Citizens are increasingly being educated about online fraud tactics, suspicious links, fake investment schemes and impersonation scams that continue to target internet users.

Technology is now becoming a central pillar of policing in Uttar Pradesh. Rajeev Krishna highlighted the use of artificial intelligence-based systems, particularly the Yaksh App, which has been developed to assist police personnel in investigations and crime analysis. The application helps officers process information more efficiently, identify patterns and improve decision-making during investigations.

Police officials believe that technology-driven policing will become even more important in the coming years as criminal activities become more sophisticated. The integration of AI tools is expected to strengthen both preventive policing and criminal investigations while reducing response times.

Apart from crime prevention, Uttar Pradesh Police has also reported encouraging progress in road safety. The DGP stated that deaths resulting from road accidents have declined by 11.5 percent. The reduction has been linked to stricter traffic enforcement, better coordination with transport authorities, improved monitoring systems and public awareness initiatives focused on responsible driving practices.

Road accidents continue to be one of the leading causes of accidental deaths across India, making the reported decline particularly significant. Officials say efforts are being made to sustain the trend through increased surveillance, targeted enforcement drives and better emergency response systems.

Concluding his remarks, Rajeev Krishna reiterated that Uttar Pradesh Police remains committed to ensuring public safety and maintaining law and order across the state. He said the force will continue to pursue criminals aggressively while embracing technology and community-focused initiatives to improve policing outcomes.

The presentation of these figures comes at a time when law and order remains a central issue in public discourse. While the state government and police leadership point to data showing measurable improvements, the effectiveness of these initiatives will ultimately continue to be judged by citizens’ experiences on the ground. For now, the police leadership maintains that Uttar Pradesh has made significant strides in strengthening security, improving women’s safety and adapting to emerging challenges in the digital age.
