The political temperature in Punjab rose sharply on Monday after police teams conducted raids at properties linked to senior Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader and former minister Bikram Singh Majithia in connection with the alleged attack on the Majitha Police Station a day earlier.
The operation began early in the day when a large number of police personnel arrived at Majithia’s residence in Amritsar’s Green Avenue locality. Officials confirmed that the veteran Akali leader was not present at the house when the police team reached the premises. Simultaneously, search operations were launched at several other locations as investigators widened their probe into Sunday’s dramatic events at the police station.
The action follows a tense confrontation that unfolded outside the Majitha Police Station after the arrest of Jobanpreet Singh, whose family has links with the Kirti Kisan Union. What began as a protest demanding information about the detainee soon escalated into a major law-and-order situation that has now become the subject of a high-level police investigation.
According to people present at the scene, union members and supporters gathered outside the police station after learning about Jobanpreet’s arrest. The protesters alleged that police had not clearly informed family members about where he was being held. As concerns grew among the demonstrators, the crowd demanded immediate access to the detainee and clarification from officers.
The situation gained further political significance when Bikram Majithia joined the protest along with a group of supporters. Majithia accused the ruling establishment of targeting political opponents and claimed that Jobanpreet had been implicated in a false case because of his association with the Shiromani Akali Dal. He argued that the arrest was politically motivated and linked it to Jobanpreet’s role as a polling agent during the recent municipal elections.
As the protest intensified, tempers reportedly flared between the demonstrators and police personnel. Videos circulating on social media showed chaotic scenes around the police station, although different sides have offered sharply contrasting accounts of what actually transpired.
Police officials maintain that the gathering turned violent and that protesters attempted to interfere with official proceedings. Investigators allege that members of the crowd tried to secure the release of the detainee from police custody, damaged government property, tore official documents and obstructed police officers from carrying out their duties. Authorities have also accused some individuals of physically confronting police personnel during the disturbance.
Addressing reporters, Amritsar Rural Senior Superintendent of Police Sohail Qasim Mir described the incident as a planned effort to disrupt lawful police action. He said investigators had examined available evidence, including videos and other material circulating in the public domain, before registering a fresh case.
Based on the preliminary findings, police have filed an FIR against more than 50 individuals. Officials said additional names could be added as the investigation progresses and more evidence is reviewed. To speed up the probe, Punjab Police has constituted 12 separate teams tasked with identifying and locating those allegedly involved in the incident.
In a significant move, authorities have also formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) headed by a senior police officer. The SIT will examine the sequence of events leading to the confrontation, assess the role of those present at the scene and determine whether any criminal conspiracy was involved.
The development has once again brought the ongoing political rivalry in Punjab into sharp focus. Supporters of the Akali Dal have questioned the timing of the police action and accused the government of using law enforcement agencies to target opposition leaders. On the other hand, police officials insist that the investigation is based solely on evidence and that no one will be given special treatment if found involved in unlawful activities.
