Independent Member of Parliament from Bihar’s Purnea, Pappu Yadav, has alleged that an attempt was made on his life after a dramatic disruption during a press conference at his official residence in New Delhi on Sunday. What began as a routine interaction with journalists quickly descended into chaos when a man allegedly hurled a shoe at the MP, triggering a scuffle between his supporters and the suspected attackers. The incident took a more serious turn after a knife was reportedly recovered, prompting police to detain two individuals and launch an investigation.
The attack unfolded while Pappu Yadav was addressing reporters on current political developments. Eyewitnesses said a man suddenly threw a slipper toward the MP, creating panic inside the venue. Within seconds, Yadav’s supporters rushed toward the alleged attacker, leading to pushing, shouting and physical confrontation. “He came to kill me with a knife. There was a conspiracy to kill me. I did not insult Sanatan. I was attacked at my residence. Given the size of the knife recovered during the attack, I would not have survived,” the MP alleged.
His remarks immediately elevated the seriousness of the incident, transforming what initially appeared to be a protest into a matter involving allegations of attempted murder. The claims are now expected to form an important part of the police investigation.
Yadav’s media coordinator, Zaid Khan, also described the incident as a targeted assault. According to Khan, supporters intervened only after the alleged attacker pulled out a knife. He claimed he stepped in to shield the MP and was assaulted during the confrontation.
“When the knife was drawn to attack, our supporters and associates tried to restrain the assailant. I came between the attacker and Pappu Yadav, and I was severely beaten. The Delhi Police stood by and allowed the beating to happen. The police did not help Yadav,” Khan said.
His allegations have raised fresh questions about security arrangements for Members of Parliament, particularly when they hold public events at their official residences. Whether police personnel present at the venue acted promptly or failed to respond effectively will likely be examined as part of the inquiry.
The incident has also triggered sharp political reactions. Congress Rajya Sabha MP Pawan Khera criticised Delhi Police, alleging inconsistency in its handling of public order situations.
“The Delhi Police seems remarkably efficient when it comes to repressing students peacefully demanding their constitutional rights. But when it comes to protecting a vocal Opposition leader — even a sitting Member of Parliament — at his own residence, it suddenly falls short. Ever since Anurag Kumar took charge as Delhi’s Police Commissioner, the force’s record has gone from bad to worse,” Khera said.
His remarks added a political dimension to the episode, with opposition leaders questioning the security available to elected representatives who frequently face public protests and political hostility.
The attack comes against the backdrop of a controversy that has dominated political discourse over the past week. During the Monsoon Session of Parliament, Opposition MPs staged a symbolic street-theatre style protest over allegations relating to the reported theft of donations at the Ram Temple in Ayodhya.
As part of the performance, Pappu Yadav dressed as a temple priest and sat beside a donation box while Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi was seen placing money into it. In the satirical sequence, Yadav later bowed before Samajwadi Party MP Awadhesh Prasad and walked away carrying the donation box, symbolically portraying the alleged theft of temple donations.
The protest attracted widespread political attention and sparked strong reactions from several Hindu religious organisations. Many seers based in Haridwar described the performance as disrespectful to Hindu religious traditions and accused the Opposition of insulting religious sentiments.
Leaders associated with the Juna Akhara publicly condemned the skit and announced plans for nationwide protests against Pappu Yadav. The criticism intensified on social media, where supporters and opponents of the MP engaged in heated exchanges over whether the protest amounted to political satire or crossed the line into hurting religious beliefs.

Pappu Yadav himself insisted that he had never insulted Sanatan Dharma and suggested that the attack stemmed from a larger conspiracy rather than spontaneous anger.
