Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio held a high-level meeting in New Delhi on Saturday, giving fresh momentum to the growing strategic partnership between India and the United States. The discussions focused on strengthening cooperation in defence, trade, critical technologies, and regional security, reflecting the increasing importance both nations place on their relationship in a rapidly changing global landscape.
Rubio arrived in the national capital after visiting Kolkata earlier in the day. The meeting with PM Modi took place at Seva Theerth and was attended by several senior officials from both sides. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor, and US Under Secretary of State Allison Hooker were also present during the talks.
According to diplomatic sources, the discussions were described as constructive and forward-looking. Both countries explored ways to expand cooperation in emerging technologies, defence manufacturing, cybersecurity, semiconductor development, and energy security. The two leaders also exchanged views on regional and global developments, particularly the Indo-Pacific region, which continues to remain a major focus for both New Delhi and Washington.
US Ambassador Sergio Gor later highlighted the importance of India in America’s strategic vision, calling the country a “vital partner” for the United States. He said both nations are committed to advancing a free, open, and secure Indo-Pacific while continuing to strengthen economic and technological collaboration.
The meeting comes at a time when India-US relations are witnessing deeper engagement across multiple sectors. Over the past few years, both countries have significantly expanded defence cooperation, increased bilateral trade, and worked more closely on technology partnerships. Analysts believe the latest meeting further reinforces the growing trust and alignment between the two democracies.
Rubio’s visit is also being viewed as strategically significant because it comes just ahead of the upcoming QUAD Foreign Ministers’ Meeting scheduled to be held in New Delhi on May 26. The Quadrilateral Security Dialogue, which includes India, the United States, Japan, and Australia, has emerged as an important platform for cooperation on regional security, maritime stability, and economic resilience in the Indo-Pacific.
Before arriving in Delhi, Rubio spent time in Kolkata where he visited the Missionaries of Charity and paid tribute to Mother Teresa. Sharing his experience on social media, he praised Mother Teresa’s humanitarian legacy and described the work of the organisation as a living example of compassion and service. His Kolkata visit marked the first visit by a senior US diplomat to the city in nearly 14 years.
Rubio is accompanied on his India tour by his wife Jeanette D. Rubio, US Ambassador Sergio Gor, and Principal Deputy National Security Advisor Robert Gabriel. During the four-day visit, he is expected to travel to several Indian cities, including Agra and Jaipur, while holding meetings focused on trade, technology, defence, and energy cooperation.

The invitation is being seen as a sign of the strong political and strategic ties between the leadership of both countries.
Officials familiar with the discussions indicated that future cooperation could include stronger defence partnerships, greater technology sharing, enhanced investment opportunities, and expanded collaboration in clean energy initiatives. Trade relations were also discussed, with both sides looking at ways to improve market access and increase economic engagement.
The latest interaction between Modi and Rubio underlines the steady growth of India-US relations at a time when geopolitical dynamics are rapidly evolving. With both nations looking to strengthen strategic coordination in Asia and beyond, the partnership is expected to play an even bigger role in shaping regional and global developments in the years ahead.
