At least eight women lost their lives in a tragic stampede at the Shitala Mata Temple in the district of Nalanda on Tuesday morning after a massive rush of devotees gathered for prayers. The incident has shocked the local community and raised fresh concerns about crowd management at popular religious sites.

According to police officials, hundreds of devotees had gathered at the temple early in the morning to offer prayers. As the crowd grew larger within a short span of time, the situation quickly became difficult to manage. Panic reportedly broke out among the devotees near the temple entrance, triggering a stampede that left several people trapped in the crowd.
Many worshippers fell during the chaos, while others behind them continued pushing forward, unaware of what had happened in front. Within minutes, the scene turned chaotic as people tried to escape the crowd while others attempted to help those who had fallen.
Authorities confirmed that eight women died in the stampede. Several others sustained injuries and were rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment. Emergency services and police teams quickly reached the temple premises after receiving information about the incident.
Bihar Sharif Assistant Superintendent of Police Noorul Haque said police personnel and district administration officials immediately reached the spot and began rescue operations. According to him, the exact reason behind the stampede is still not clear, but the heavy rush of devotees is believed to have played a major role in the tragedy.
Rescue teams, along with local volunteers, worked to clear the crowd and transport injured devotees to hospitals. Ambulances were deployed quickly, and police officers tried to restore order at the temple complex to prevent further incidents.
Officials have started gathering statements from eyewitnesses to determine how the situation escalated so rapidly. Authorities are also reviewing whether proper crowd management arrangements were in place at the temple during the morning rush.
The tragedy has left families of the victims in deep grief. Relatives gathered outside hospitals and the temple premises seeking information about their loved ones. Local residents described the incident as sudden and terrifying, with people running in panic and shouting for help as the stampede unfolded.
The incident has once again highlighted the urgent need for stronger crowd control measures at busy religious sites, especially during peak prayer hours when large numbers of devotees gather within a limited space.
Authorities in the district have assured that a detailed investigation will be carried out to determine the circumstances that led to the stampede and to ensure that similar incidents can be prevented in the future.
