An Air Canada Express regional jet was involved in a runway collision at New York’s LaGuardia Airport on Monday evening, leaving four people injured and forcing authorities to temporarily shut down airport operations. The incident occurred when the aircraft, arriving from Montreal, struck a ground vehicle during landing, turning a routine arrival into a high-alert emergency situation.

According to initial reports, the CRJ-900 aircraft, operated by Jazz Aviation, hit the vehicle at an estimated speed of 24 miles per hour (39 km/h). The impact caused visible damage to the front section of the plane, with unverified visuals suggesting the nose of the aircraft tilted upward after the collision. Emergency response teams rushed to the scene within minutes to contain the situation and assist those affected.
At least four individuals sustained injuries in the accident, including the pilot and co-pilot, who were reported to be seriously hurt. Medical teams provided immediate assistance, while authorities have yet to release detailed updates on the condition of all injured persons. The New York Fire Department confirmed it responded to the runway incident but did not provide further specifics.
Following the collision, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) imposed an immediate ground stop at LaGuardia Airport, citing an emergency situation. The suspension of operations led to widespread disruption, with several incoming flights diverted to nearby airports or returned to their origin points. Airport authorities indicated that the shutdown could extend for several hours as safety checks and preliminary investigations were carried out.
Passengers faced delays and uncertainty as airlines worked to manage the fallout from the incident. LaGuardia, one of the busiest airports in the United States, experienced significant operational challenges as a result of the runway closure.
Investigations have been launched to determine how the ground vehicle came into the path of the landing aircraft. Aviation experts are expected to examine coordination between ground staff and flight crews, as well as communication protocols and visibility conditions at the time of the incident. So far, neither Air Canada nor regulatory authorities have issued a detailed explanation regarding the cause of the collision.
The incident has once again highlighted the importance of strict runway safety measures. Airports depend on precise timing and coordination between aircraft and ground vehicles, especially during critical moments like landing. Even a small lapse can result in serious consequences, as seen in this case.
