Chandigarh in flood preparedness: DC Nishant Kumar Yadav inspects Sukhna lake and rain-affected areas

Chandigarh, Sep 1: In view of incessant heavy rains and rising flood concerns, Chandigarh Deputy Commissioner DC Nishant Kumar Yadav on Monday conducted a comprehensive inspection of Sukhna lake regulatory main gate and other rain-affected areas. He was accompanied by Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) and Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM), East, who reviewed the ground conditions, drainage levels and precautionary measures.

The inspection team visited key locations including waterlogging-prone areas, damaged infrastructure and vulnerable localities that could be at greater risk if heavy rains continue. The DC Nishant Kumar Yadav directed departments to clear drainage channels on priority basis, keep emergency response teams ready and ensure deployment of machinery for quick relief operations.

Highlighting the importance of coordination, DC Nishant Kumar Yadav said the engineering wing, police, health services and disaster management officials must work seamlessly to ensure timely response. He called upon the residents to remain alert, vigilant and cooperative and urged them to report any emergency immediately.

DC Nishant Yadav said, “The safety and well-being of every citizen is our top priority. The administration is fully committed to timely assistance, effective preparedness and building a more resilient Chandigarh.”

The SSP informed that traffic police teams are actively regulating movement in waterlogged areas and assisting residents in vulnerable areas. He assured that additional staff has been deployed to maintain safety and prevent accidents during heavy rains.

Meanwhile, SDM (East) took stock of the relief arrangements, restoration works and monitoring of critical points in the sub-division. Officials confirmed that precautionary measures are already being taken, along with long-term strategies being formulated to strengthen Chandigarh’s flood and disaster resilience.

With the weather forecast warning of possible heavy rains, the Chandigarh administration is ramping up preparations to minimise the damage. Regular monitoring of the water level of Sukhna Lake and real-time coordination between departments for the safety of residents and public property remain the key focus areas.
