Chandigarh: A somber beginning to the New Year unfolded on the Chandigarh-Hisar National Highway as a road accident claimed the life of a 45-year-old devotee and left 15 others injured. The incident occurred early Monday morning, around 6 a.m., near Kalayat, between Batta and Kailram villages, under dense fog conditions.
The deceased has been identified as Gurumukh, who belonged to a group of devotees returning home from a religious site in Rajasthan. The group was traveling in a pick-up vehicle when it collided with a stationary truck reportedly left parked without proper warning signs.
Survivors of the crash described how a dense fog had rendered visibility on the highway almost negligible, making it impossible for the driver to identify the stationary truck in time. The impact from the collision resulted in the car being mangled and trapping many passengers inside.
Locals who were witness to the scene rushed to assist and informed the police. SHO Jaibhagwan and his team arrived quickly to coordinate the rescue. “The injured were rescued with the help of locals and rushed to the district hospital for immediate treatment,” said the officer.
The truck driver has been booked after a complaint was lodged with the SHO Jaibhagwan. He said that the truck had broken on the road and, without any warning sign, collided head-on with the vehicle in which the accident has been reported to be fatal.
Injured women and children are being treated at the district hospital in Kaithal. Gurumukh’s body has been handed over to his family after the postmortem.
The collision had thrown many of the passengers unconscious, and survivors described a chaotic aftermath. “The dense fog made everything worse. Before we realized what was happening, the impact threw us around,” said one survivor, recounting the terrifying moments inside the vehicle.
This tragic accident has raised concern for road safety and the need to have stricter measures to prevent such incidents. Authorities have appealed to drivers to be cautious, especially during winter months when fog poses a huge hazard on highways.
As the injured heal and Gurumukh’s family mourns over the loss, such an accident reminds everyone of the proper road safety measures and precautions to be taken while traveling.
