Chandigarh: In a strong bid to deal with the ever-increasing unpaid traffic challans, the Chandigarh Administration has decided to take stringent action against vehicle owners who have five or more pending challans. With more than 7.5 lakh traffic challans still pending in the city, the authorities are determined to bring in compliance and improve road safety.
If they have five or more unpaid challans, the authorities will issue a notice to such vehicle owners requiring them to clear the dues within 15 days, failing which driving licences and suspension of registration certificates (RCs) of vehicles would be cancelled. These stern actions have been taken so as to stop many violations of overspeeding, red light jumping, and dangerous driving for which a sizeable number of pending fines was amassed.
Registering and Licensing Authority In-charge Pradhuman Singh was vocal about the fact that challans keep pouring in, even after several reminders and notices were issued. “Even after multiple notices and warnings, the drivers’ tendency to avoid paying fines for offenses such as speeding, red light violations, and dangerous driving persists. If a driver has five challans pending with him, then he will be issued notice to clear them within 15 days.”. Non-compliance will lead to the withdrawal of their driving licenses and suspension of their RCs,” he said.
In addition, vehicles owned by defaulters will be marked as “not to be transacted,” which will prevent any transaction concerning the vehicle. This includes transfer of ownership, renewal of RCs, issuance of duplicate RCs, pollution certificates, and insurance. All these restrictions will continue until all traffic violations are cleared and the amount paid.
The move is part of a broader effort by the administration to promote road safety and ensure adherence to traffic laws. Citizens are urged to check their pending challans and settle dues promptly to avoid inconvenience. The administration has also emphasized that these measures are essential to creating a culture of accountability and responsibility among vehicle owners.
The citizens are advised to visit the official traffic portal of the city or call the traffic helpline for further details. The administration assures to make Chandigarh’s roads safer for everyone.
