Yuzvendra Chahal and Dhanashree Verma Granted Divorce by Bandra family Court; Yuzi Agrees to Pay ₹4.75 Cr in Alimony

Mumbai: Indian cricketer Yuzvendra Chahal and his wife Dhanashree Verma have been officially granted a divorce by mutual consent, as per the ruling of a family court in Bandra, Mumbai, on Thursday. The couple had been fighting a legal battle to waive the mandatory six-month cooling-off period required under the Hindu Marriage Act, and the Bombay High Court ruled in their favor.

Chahal, who is set to participate in the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) starting March 22, had jointly filed a petition with Verma on February 5, seeking an expedited divorce process. The court ruling was significant, considering that the cricketer’s professional commitments with the Punjab Kings would make his availability for court proceedings difficult in the future.

Legal Proceedings and High Court Intervention

The couple had initially separated in June 2022, and after nearly two years, they decided to legally part ways. On February 20, the family court had refused to waive the six-month cooling-off period, citing partial compliance with the consent terms. According to court records, Chahal was supposed to pay a total alimony of Rs 4.75 crore to Verma but had only paid Rs 2.37 crore at that time.

Subsequently, the couple challenged the family court’s decision in the Bombay High Court, which ruled in their favor on Wednesday. The high court observed that there was substantial compliance with the settlement terms, as the second installment of the agreed amount was to be paid only after the divorce decree was granted.

Court’s Final Verdict

Following the high court’s directive, the Bandra Family Court granted the divorce on Thursday, allowing the couple to move forward with their respective lives. Advocate Nitin Gupta, representing Chahal, confirmed that the decree of divorce was issued after the court reviewed and accepted their joint petition.

“The family court has granted the decree on the joint petition filed by Yuzvendra Chahal and Dhanashree Verma for divorce by mutual consent. The parties have fully complied with the consent terms,” said Gupta.

Impact on Yuzvendra Chahal’s IPL Commitments

With the divorce proceedings concluded, Yuzvendra Chahal can now focus entirely on his cricketing commitments, especially with the IPL 2024 season approaching. As a key member of the Punjab Kings, Chahal will be expected to play a crucial role in the franchise’s campaign, bringing his expertise as a leg-spinner to the squad.

The legal battle and subsequent divorce have marked the end of Chahal and Verma’s three-year-long marriage, which began in December 2020. While the couple has parted ways amicably, Chahal’s fans will now be looking forward to his on-field performances in the upcoming cricket season.
