UP Government Forms SIT to Probe Ram Mandir Donation Controversy Amid Political Uproar

The Uttar Pradesh government has ordered a high-level investigation into allegations surrounding donations made to the Ram Temple in Ayodhya, marking a significant development in a controversy that has rapidly evolved from political accusations into a matter of public scrutiny. Acting on the directions of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and following a request from the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust, the state government has constituted a three-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) to examine claims related to the temple trust’s financial management and donation records.

The formation of the SIT comes at a time when questions over the handling of donations have dominated political discourse in Uttar Pradesh and beyond. The Ram Temple, one of the most significant religious and cultural projects in modern India, has attracted contributions from millions of devotees across the country and overseas. As a result, any allegation involving temple funds carries enormous emotional, political, and social significance.

According to government officials, the SIT will be headed by senior bureaucrat Vijay Vishwas Pant, the Divisional Commissioner of Lucknow. The team also includes Kiran S, Inspector General of Police, and Neel Ratan, Special Secretary in the Finance Department. The inclusion of administrative, police, and financial experts indicates that authorities intend to conduct a comprehensive review of the allegations from multiple angles.

The controversy first gained momentum after Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav publicly raised concerns regarding reports that substantial amounts of donation money collected for the Ram Temple were allegedly unaccounted for. Describing the issue as highly sensitive for millions of devotees, Yadav called for judicial intervention and urged authorities to take the matter seriously. His remarks quickly ignited a broader political debate, with opposition parties demanding greater transparency in the management of temple funds.

As the allegations spread, the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust moved to reassure devotees and the public. Trust General Secretary Champat Rai stated that regular audits were already being conducted and that no evidence supporting claims of missing funds had surfaced. He emphasized that the trust’s financial processes were subject to periodic review and scrutiny.

“We are continuously carrying out audits with the involvement of representatives from the trust and the State Bank of India. So far, nothing unusual has come to light,” Rai said while responding to the allegations.

Trust officials have maintained that transparency mechanisms are in place and that the organization has nothing to hide. Mahant Dinendra Das, another member of the trust, expressed confidence in its functioning and stated that any investigation ordered by the government would be welcomed.

Despite these assurances, the controversy continued to expand. Akhilesh Yadav reiterated his allegations on multiple occasions, keeping the issue alive in public discussions. The debate intensified further when former BJP MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh claimed that he was aware of alleged misuse of donations but declined to disclose specific details. His comments added another layer of intrigue to the unfolding controversy, prompting demands for greater clarity.

The issue took on additional political dimensions when senior BJP leader Rajneesh Singh wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking a detailed public disclosure of the trust’s financial records. In his communication, Singh argued that devotees who contributed money, jewellery, ornaments, and other valuables for the construction of the temple deserved complete transparency regarding how those contributions were being managed and utilized.

His demand included disclosure of donation records, expenditures, bank accounts, land transactions, and the overall financial position of the trust. The letter reflected a growing sentiment among some observers that public confidence could be strengthened through proactive disclosure rather than reactive responses.

The Uttar Pradesh government initially maintained that the matter primarily fell under the jurisdiction of the trust. State minister Surya Pratap Shahi noted that the trust had already initiated its own review process and would take appropriate action if required under its established rules and regulations. However, with political pressure mounting and public interest growing, the decision to establish an SIT signals a willingness by the state government to ensure an independent examination of the allegations.

The Congress party also entered the debate, demanding a more expansive inquiry. Uttar Pradesh Congress chief Ajay Rai called for an investigation led by a sitting High Court judge, arguing that such a probe would inspire greater public confidence and eliminate doubts regarding impartiality.

Meanwhile, Ram Temple Construction Committee chairman Nripendra Mishra sought to distance himself from the controversy. Mishra clarified that his responsibilities are limited to overseeing construction-related activities and infrastructure development associated with the temple project. He declined to comment on allegations concerning donations or financial irregularities, emphasizing that such matters fall outside his official role.

The controversy has emerged at a particularly important moment in the history of the Ram Temple project. The temple stands not only as a place of worship but also as a symbol deeply connected to India’s political and cultural landscape. The construction of the temple was made possible through contributions from countless devotees who viewed participation in the project as a matter of faith and national significance.
