Climate activist Sonam Wangchuk was arrested in Leh following violent protests demanding Ladakh’s statehood and Sixth Schedule status, resulting in four deaths and over 70 injuries.

Leh, Ladakh – September 26, 2025 – Prominent climate activist Sonam Wangchuk was arrested by Leh police on Friday after violent protests shook the region, resulting in the deaths of four people and injuries to at least 80 others. The unrest erupted during demonstrations demanding full statehood for Ladakh and its inclusion under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution.
Escalation of the Protests
The demonstrations, organized by local activists advocating greater political autonomy, started peacefully but quickly escalated into violence. Protesters clashed with security personnel and set fire to several properties, including the local office of a major political party. The confrontation left the city tense and authorities on high alert.
Wangchuk, known for his work in education and environmental activism, had been at the forefront of these protests, calling for constitutional safeguards and increased recognition of Ladakh’s unique cultural and geographical identity.
Arrest and Security Measures
Leh Police, under the supervision of DGP S.D. Singh Jamwal, detained Wangchuk amid fears that the demonstrations could spiral further out of control. Following his arrest, a curfew was imposed in Leh under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023, prohibiting gatherings of more than five people. Internet services were also suspended to maintain public order.
Authorities emphasized that Wangchuk’s detention was a preventive measure aimed at restoring peace and preventing further escalation.
Public Reaction
The arrest has drawn reactions from both local communities and activists nationwide. Supporters of Wangchuk expressed concern about what they describe as excessive government action, while officials maintain that the steps were necessary given the violence that occurred.
Despite the crackdown, demands for Ladakh’s statehood and Sixth Schedule inclusion remain central to public discourse, reflecting long-standing regional aspirations for greater autonomy and recognition.
