Maharashtra – A 45-year-old software engineer, Sohail Sheikh, has been booked for allegedly divorcing his 28-year-old second wife using triple talaq after she refused to have sexual relations with his boss. The incident, which has shocked the local community, highlights issues of exploitation and abuse within marriage.
As police reports revealed, the couple got married in January 2024. Shortly after their wedding, Sohail allegedly threatened to extract money from his second wife and demanded that she would arrange ₹15 lakh a month from her parents for her husband’s first wife. The woman refused him and Sohail allegedly took it as a threat where he forced her to perform sexual activities with his boss at a party. She had also assaulted him when he pronounced triple talaq and expelled her from their house.
A Case Filed Against Sohail Sheikh
The aggrieved lady lodged a complaint at the Sambhaji Nagar City Police Station on December 19. The complaint enumerated physical and mental harassment, threats of financial extortion, and compulsion to indulge in non-consensual activities.
The Superintendent of Police has confirmed that a case had been registered under the relevant sections of law and transferred to the Bazar Peth Police Station for further investigation. The authorities are now probing allegations of domestic violence, mental harassment, and exploitation.
Legal Implications and Public Outrage
The incident has brought attention to the public regarding misuse of triple talaq, which was criminalized in India under the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Act, 2019. The law provides a maximum of three years in jail for the perpetrators in case they are found guilty of using the practice to divorce their wives.
Activists and legal experts have criticized the incident and called for strict action against the accused. “This is not only a violation of law but also a serious human rights issue. Women should not be allowed to be exploited and tortured in the name of marriage,” said a local women’s rights activist.
Though the police have registered the case so far, no arrests are made. According to reports, the officials have stated investigations are going on and that would be particularly into allegations of having forced the woman to enter into sexual acts with one other person. “All evidence is being examined. Appropriate action will be done,” said the investigating officer.
The incident has once again brought into limelight the need for strong enforcement of laws to protect women from domestic violence and marital exploitation. The survivor, seeking justice now, has asked authorities to ensure that her ex-husband faces consequences of his actions. As the investigation unfolds, the case is a grim reminder of exploitation in some marriages and how perpetrators must be held accountable.
