Rain to Bring Relief to Chandigarh, Punjab and Haryana After Days of Scorching Heat

For days, people across Chandigarh, Punjab, and Haryana have been struggling under an unforgiving sun, with roads nearly empty during afternoon hours and hot winds making daily life difficult. But after this intense spell of heat, relief finally seems to be on the horizon.

Rain to Bring Relief to Chandigarh, Punjab and Haryana After Days of Scorching Heat

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted rain, thunderstorms, and strong winds from Friday onwards, bringing hope of cooler weather across the region. Until then, however, heatwave conditions are expected to continue, with temperatures staying well above normal for the next couple of days.

Chandigarh recorded a scorching 42.7 degrees Celsius on Monday, making it one of the hottest places in Punjab. Bathinda remained the hottest in the state at 44.7 degrees Celsius, while Haryana’s Sirsa touched a blistering 46.2 degrees Celsius.

Even nights have offered little comfort. Mohali recorded one of the warmest nights in Punjab as temperatures stayed unusually high after sunset, leaving residents uncomfortable throughout the night.

Across Punjab and Haryana, people were seen avoiding outdoor movement during peak afternoon hours. Markets remained quieter than usual, and many residents relied on coolers, air conditioners, and frequent water breaks to cope with the extreme weather.

According to weather officials, the current heatwave conditions will likely continue till Wednesday. Thursday may bring partly cloudy skies, and from Friday onwards, a significant change in weather is expected.

The IMD has forecast fairly widespread rainfall along with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds reaching speeds of up to 50 to 60 kmph in isolated areas. There is also a possibility of hailstorms in some districts.

The expected rain spell could bring temperatures down noticeably across the Tricity region of Chandigarh, Mohali, and Panchkula. Weather experts believe daytime temperatures may fall to around 37 degrees Celsius by Saturday, offering much-needed respite after days of relentless heat.

Despite the current dry conditions, Chandigarh has actually recorded slightly above-normal seasonal rainfall this year so far. The city has received 105 mm of rain since March 1, according to weather department data.

For now, residents are being advised to stay hydrated, avoid direct sunlight during afternoon hours, and take precautions against heat-related illnesses. But with clouds and rain finally expected later this week, many are hoping the worst of this heatwave is nearly over.
