IndiGo Flight Cancellation Crisis: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday delivered a strong message during the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) Parliamentary Party meeting in New Delhi, asserting that reforms and regulations across all sectors must be crafted with the citizens’ convenience in mind — not to burden or harass them.
His remarks came at a time when the country’s largest airline, IndiGo, is facing intense criticism following widespread flight cancellations since December 2, leaving passengers stranded and frustrated at major airports.
PM Modi’s Message: Reforms Must Ease Daily Life
Speaking at the GMC Balayogi Auditorium in the Parliament Library Building, PM Modi underlined that reforms are not limited to economic decisions or financial adjustments. Instead, he noted that reforms must collectively improve the ease of living for every citizen.
Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju, briefing reporters after the meeting, quoted the Prime Minister as saying that laws and rules should strengthen the system without creating unnecessary complications for people.
“He laid great emphasis on reforms that make the lives of ordinary citizens easier and more comfortable,” Rijiju said. “Reforms in every sector — that was his message. The PM has given us clear and positive guidelines.”
Rijiju added that the Prime Minister urged NDA MPs to build stronger connections with young people and remain attentive to real-life challenges faced by citizens.
IndiGo Crisis Intensifies as Govt Moves to Stabilise Situation
The ongoing aviation turmoil formed the backdrop to PM Modi’s remarks. IndiGo’s operational disruptions have resulted in hundreds of sudden cancellations, forcing the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) to step in.
The aviation regulator has directed IndiGo to cut its flight schedule by 5% and submit a revised operational plan by December 10. The government has also intervened by capping airfares on affected routes to prevent price surges.
The crisis has triggered widespread complaints on social media, with passengers reporting long queues, mismanagement, and lack of timely communication from the airline.
NDA Leaders Attend High-Level Meeting
The parliamentary party meeting also saw the presence of several senior leaders, including Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, JDU MP Sanjay Jha, NCP MP Praful Patel, and Minister L. Murugan, among others.
Rijiju described the meeting as “very positive,” adding that the NDA is motivated to work with full force to advance PM Modi’s reform-focused vision.
PM Modi’s Broader Vision: Reducing Burden of Old Laws
This is not the first time PM Modi has highlighted the need to review outdated rules. His government has already repealed hundreds of obsolete laws in recent years as part of a broader effort to simplify compliance and enhance ease of doing business.
Tuesday’s message, however, was more explicitly tied to the public mood amid the ongoing travel chaos, reinforcing the idea that regulations must support — not frustrate — citizens.
