A Pakistani doctor and social media content creator, popularly known as Fani, has found himself in a major controversy after one of his viral videos posted on Instagram created outrage. In the video titled “Why China Smells So Bad” Fani makes some very offending remarks about China, which have been deemed false and insulting by many.
In the now-viral video, Fani claims, “People who haven’t been to China may not know that when you enter, the smell here is really bad.” He further recounted his experience, stating, “When I changed my flight in Dubai, there were so many Chinese people, and the smell was unbearable. But when I arrived in China, the smell was even worse. However, after a while, you get used to it if you live in that environment.”
He further stated, “On the first day, I couldn’t eat anything because of the smell, and it’s not just in China; most European countries have the same smell.”
The video that was shared two days ago is already trending, with 56.6k views. But it also caught a lot of flak from netizens who found the statements offensive and unfounded.
Backlash from Social Media Users
Several users condemned Fani for his remarks and mentioned that the statements were completely out of bounds as they didn’t reflect the ground reality. A user posted, “Unn ko app se aati ho gee bhai. This smell is a relative term. A fragrance for one community may be an odor for another one. So please do not defame other nationalities. I know how our houses in Punjab smell like.”
There’s a user, a two years stay in China citizen, “No way man. This stench doesn’t really matter that much. Indeed you are far too much daddy type. Besides the rest of Chinese are hygienic too.
A third user said, “Bro don’t bad mouth any country, it’s not that we are taught to do. Let Westerners do that, they are good at this. Respect the country which you are in and which gave you the opportunity to travel it.”
Many users said that the comments were not only offensive but also factually wrong. “Basically, it is a giant falsehood. I’ve been living in China for two years now, but I’ve never smelled that odor. They’re well-educated, nice, and clean,” one user explained.
Another commenter added humorously, “I think you smelled your own smell, that’s why.”
The video has raised questions about the responsibilities of social media influencers and content creators. Many have called for greater sensitivity and accountability when discussing other cultures, especially in a public forum.
Fani hasn’t responded yet to the backlash, but the incident reminds everyone that sharing unverified and offensive opinions online can be a recipe for disaster. It also shows how powerful social media can be in both amplifying voices of support and criticism, and how it can shape public discourse in real-time.
