A powerful explosion near a railway track in Pakistan’s Balochistan province left at least 20 people injured on Sunday, creating panic in Quetta and forcing authorities to place the city on high alert. The blast took place close to Chaman Phatak railway station, an area that usually remains busy with traffic and daily commuters.
According to local police and rescue officials, the explosion damaged a section of the railway line and partially affected a train that was in the vicinity. Several vehicles parked nearby were also hit by the impact. Witnesses said the sound of the blast echoed across surrounding neighborhoods, sending people rushing out of homes and shops in fear.
The force of the explosion shattered glass windows of nearby buildings and scattered debris across the road. Residents described chaotic scenes moments after the incident, with injured people lying on the ground as rescue teams hurried to the location. Ambulances and security personnel reached the area within minutes and shifted the wounded to hospitals across Quetta.
Officials confirmed that at least 20 people sustained injuries, though authorities fear the number could rise as more information emerges. An emergency was immediately declared in government hospitals, and additional doctors and medical staff were called in to handle the situation.
Railway authorities stopped the Peshawar-bound Jaffar Express at Quetta Railway Station as a safety measure after the blast. Security teams later began checking railway tracks and nearby areas to ensure there were no additional threats.
Babar Yousafzai, spokesperson for the provincial home minister, said all relevant agencies had been alerted following the incident. He urged citizens to stay away from the blast site so emergency responders could continue rescue and investigation work without disruption.
So far, no group has claimed responsibility for the explosion. Investigators are examining evidence from the scene to determine the exact nature of the blast and whether explosives had been planted near the railway track.
