Prime Minister Narendra Modi created a light and memorable diplomatic moment during his visit to Rome when he gifted a packet of the famous Indian candy Melody Toffee to Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. The simple yet thoughtful gesture quickly caught the attention of social media users around the world and once again highlighted the friendly rapport between the two leaders.
Meloni herself shared the moment online, posting a short and cheerful video on X (formerly Twitter). In the clip, she can be seen holding the packet of Melody toffees and smiling as she says, “Prime Minister Modi brought us a gift, a very, very good toffee – Melody.” The video instantly sparked reactions across the internet, with many users praising the friendly chemistry between the two leaders.
The moment also revived the viral nickname “Melodi,” a playful combination of Modi and Meloni’s names. The term first gained popularity during international meetings when the two leaders were seen sharing friendly interactions. It became widely known in 2023 after Meloni posted a selfie with Modi during the G20 Summit 2023, captioning it “Hello from the Melodi team.” Since then, the hashtag has frequently appeared online whenever the two leaders meet.
During his visit to Italy, Modi also shared images from his meeting with Meloni on social media. The leaders spent time together over dinner and later visited the historic Colosseum, one of the most iconic landmarks in Rome. Modi described the meeting as an opportunity to exchange views on several important issues and to explore ways of strengthening cooperation between the two countries.
Meloni also warmly welcomed the Indian Prime Minister to the Italian capital, sharing a photo of the two leaders together and writing, “Welcome to Rome, my friend.” The images and messages reflected the strong personal rapport that has developed between them over the past few years.
Beyond the viral “Melodi” moment, Modi’s visit carries important diplomatic significance. India and Italy are currently working to deepen their partnership through the Joint Strategic Action Plan 2025–2029. The framework focuses on expanding cooperation in several areas including trade, investment, defence collaboration, clean energy, science, technology, and innovation. Both countries see the partnership as an important bridge between Europe and Asia in an increasingly interconnected global economy.
This is not the first time Modi has visited Italy in recent years. In June 2024, he travelled to the country to participate in the G7 Summit 2024, where he held discussions with leaders from some of the world’s largest economies. The visit helped strengthen India’s engagement with European partners and highlighted the country’s growing role in global diplomacy.
Before arriving in Rome for this trip, Modi also participated in the India-Nordic Summit, where discussions focused on boosting cooperation with Nordic nations in areas such as green energy, technology, and sustainable development.
While diplomatic visits often focus on strategic agreements and economic discussions, small gestures like the Melody toffee gift add a human touch to international relations. The viral “Melodi” moment shows how personal warmth between leaders can resonate with people across countries, turning even a simple candy into a symbol of friendship.
