A political controversy has erupted in Uttar Pradesh after Samajwadi Party leader Digvijay Bhati alleged that he was brutally assaulted inside the office of Meerut SSP Avinash Pandey. Bhati has accused SSP Pandey and Inspector Akhilesh Gaur of physically assaulting him after he went to meet the senior police officer in connection with the Lalita Gautam murder case.
According to Digvijay Bhati, he had earlier been sent to jail after participating in a protest related to the Lalita Gautam murder case. He said he visited the Meerut SSP on Thursday to discuss the matter and seek clarification regarding the case.
Bhati has alleged that the meeting quickly turned hostile. According to his account, SSP Avinash Pandey allegedly used abusive language against him and questioned his status as a political leader. Bhati claimed that when he objected to the alleged abuse, the situation escalated and the SSP assaulted him inside his chamber.
The SP leader further alleged that the assault did not end inside the SSP’s office. He claimed that personnel subsequently took him to the SOG office, where his hands and legs were allegedly tied and he was beaten with sticks.
These are serious allegations against senior police officials. The claims made by Bhati have not been independently established on the basis of the information available here, and any formal inquiry or investigation will be crucial in determining what happened inside the SSP’s office and later at the SOG premises.
The controversy gained further attention after SSP Avinash Pandey was removed from his post in Meerut late Thursday night. According to the information provided, Pandey has been attached to the Police Headquarters in Lucknow. The timing of the administrative action has added to the political and public interest surrounding Bhati’s allegations.
The development is particularly significant because the Meerut SSP had already attracted attention in connection with the Lalita Gautam murder case. The officer had reportedly faced controversy over the earlier “slap incident” linked to the same case.
The Lalita Gautam murder case has therefore become an important backdrop to the latest dispute. What began as a protest and a demand for action has now expanded into allegations of custodial-style violence and questions about the conduct of senior police officers.
Bhati’s account raises broader questions about the manner in which political representatives, protesters and police officials interact during sensitive criminal investigations. When allegations of physical assault involve a senior police officer, transparency becomes particularly important because the police force itself is responsible for maintaining public confidence in the rule of law.
The allegation that Bhati was taken from the SSP’s chamber to the SOG office and beaten after being restrained is especially serious. If independently established, such conduct could raise significant questions about police procedure, accountability and the treatment of individuals in police custody or under police control.
At the same time, the removal of an officer from a field posting does not by itself establish guilt. A departmental or independent inquiry would be required to determine whether the allegations are true, who was involved, and whether any police procedures were violated.
The matter has also reportedly reached the attention of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. With the controversy now involving allegations against senior police personnel and an administrative transfer at the top of the Meerut police hierarchy, the issue is likely to remain under scrutiny.
For the Samajwadi Party, the allegations provide another point of confrontation with the state police and the Uttar Pradesh government. For the police administration, the episode presents a test of whether complaints involving senior officers can be examined through a transparent and credible process.
The immediate focus will now be on the evidence surrounding the alleged assault, including any available CCTV footage, medical examination records, statements of witnesses and other official records. Such evidence could help establish what happened during the meeting between Bhati and the SSP and what occurred after Bhati was allegedly taken to the SOG office.

Senior officers exercise considerable authority, particularly during politically sensitive criminal cases. Any allegation of excessive force or abuse of authority therefore requires careful examination rather than political speculation alone.
As the controversy develops, the key questions will be whether a formal inquiry is ordered, what evidence emerges regarding Bhati’s allegations, and what action is taken if the claims are substantiated. The removal of Avinash Pandey from the Meerut posting has already marked a significant administrative development, but the larger issue of accountability remains unresolved.
