Massive Fire Ravages Savni Village in Uttarkashi: One Dead, 25 Families Left Homeless

Tragedy struck Uttarakhand’s Savni village on Sunday night as a massive fire engulfed nine wooden houses, killing a woman and displacing over 25 families. The fire, believed to have been ignited by a puja lamp in a villager’s home, began around 9 PM and spread rapidly through the closely packed wooden structures.

The village, situated at a distance of 45 km from the headquarter of tehsil Mori, bore the brunt of the fire as deodar and pine wood in the homes kept on burning, and all the belongings and homes were reduced to ashes, with nothing else but the clothes on their backs.

They, alarmed by the spreading fire, called the District Disaster Management and Administration at 11 PM. However, the first rescue team only reached the location at 12:30 AM because of the location that was secluded and hilly. They had to walk 5 kilometers from Jakhol in the dark. The villagers fought the flames for hours before help came. Firefighters were finally able to gain control over the flames by 3 AM. The people suffered burns in the process.

District Magistrate Dr. Mehraban Singh Bisht quickly mobilized relief teams, directing medical, drinking water, and other essential services to the area. Help also came from the Satluj Jal Vidyut Nigam, Tons Forest Division, and Govind Wildlife Sanctuary.

Sub-Divisional Magistrate Devanand Sharma confirmed that nine houses were completely destroyed, displacing 15–16 families. To prevent the fire from spreading further, two additional houses were demolished entirely, while three others were partially taken down. In total, 22–25 families have been affected by the disaster.

This is not the first time such a calamity has befallen the Savni village. A terrible fire had razed 39 houses and killed 100 cattle back in 2018, and its scars were only just starting to heal before this latest tragedy.

The district administration has assured the affected families of every possible support: temporary shelter, food, and medical assistance. Rehabilitation efforts are under way, with an orientation toward preventing such disasters in the future.

The incident is a stern reminder of the fragility of remote, wooden built villages, which require urgent improvement in fire safety measures.
