Manmohan Singh Funeral LIVE: India pays an emotional tribute to former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, who left for the great beyond on December 26 at the age of 92. Dr. Manmohan Singh passed away at AIIMS Delhi. His mortal remains are being taken to Nigambodh Ghat in New Delhi for the last rites, which will be performed with full state honours at 11:45 am today.

The central government declared seven days state mourning for Dr. Manmohan Singh. This former Prime Minister is the 13th to hold this position for India. He has given great economic reforms, a comprehensive policy of inclusive growth, and his unwavering commitment to public service in this country.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be present at the funeral, paying homage to a leader who shaped India’s economic and political landscape. “Dr. Manmohan Singh’s contributions to our nation will always be remembered. He was a visionary leader whose policies transformed the lives of millions,” PM Modi said in a statement.

According to a statement issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs, Dr. Manmohan Singh’s cremation would be carried out with full state honours. “It has been decided by the government that a state funeral will be accorded to Dr. Manmohan Singh. The funeral will take place at 11:45 am on December 28, 2024, at Nigambodh Ghat, New Delhi,” the MHA noted.

The ministry also said that a memorial will be established to pay tribute to Dr. Manmohan Singh. “Cremation and other necessary formalities will proceed as scheduled. A trust will be formed to oversee the allocation of space for the memorial,” the statement added.

The Congress party has urged the government to ensure a befitting memorial for Dr. Manmohan Singh, emphasizing his global stature and decades of exemplary service. Congress leader Jairam Ramesh expressed disappointment over the initial uncertainty regarding the location for the cremation and memorial.

“The people of our country are simply unable to understand why the Government of India could not find a place for his cremation and memorial that reflects his extraordinary legacy,” Ramesh posted on X (formerly Twitter).

A Nation in Mourning

As the nation marks seven days of mourning, tributes are pouring in from around the world. Dr Singh was known to have the finest tenure of a prime minister with far-reaching reforms and historic diplomatic achievements. The India-U.S. Civil Nuclear Agreement stands out among them.
