The picture in contention, which had Mahira and Ranbir smoking away on the streets of New York, caused a big stir on social media. Criticism was swift. Mahira faced backlash regarding her actions. She admitted feeling that her career might well be over when the picture went viral.
“When the pictures came out, there was an article called The Little White Dress published by the BBC,” Mahira remembered. “At that time, I did not realize the brilliance of that article. I recall reading it and wondering, ‘Is my career over?’ The article discussed how I had attained a level of success no one in Pakistan ever did – with endorsements, fame, and recognition – and that was all going down the drain. That really hit me.”
Mahira shared that the backlash took a huge toll on her mental health. “I wouldn’t get out of bed; I cried daily,” she confessed. “It took a toll on both my personal and professional life. It was one of the toughest times for me.”
Rumors about a relationship between Mahira and Ranbir Kapoor gained momentum after their initial public interaction at the Global Teacher Prize event in Dubai. However, their alleged relationship reportedly fizzled out after the controversy surrounding the viral image.
Despite the turmoil, Mahira remained steadfast, choosing to focus on positivity and personal growth. She shared that brands she had worked with stood by her during the challenging time. “I made personal choices that were right for me and my child,” Mahira said, referring to her son Azlan. “Professionally, I kept quiet because I knew I couldn’t say anything. But I knew this phase would pass.”
Mahira, who has a 13-year-old son with her ex-husband Ali Askari, recently got married to businessman Salim Karim. Talking about her journey, she said she had always been a fighter and wanted to keep moving ahead and make the right decisions for herself and her family.
Mahira Khan is now prepping for her upcoming Netflix series, Jo Bachay Hain Sang Samait Lo, with Fawad Khan and Sanam Saeed. This is next year’s release. Mahira Khan, who has inspired fans with her resilience and perseverance, can conquer the toughest challenges that come her way.
