The Neyyattinkara Additional District Sessions Court in Kerala has ordered the death sentence of 24-year-old Greeshma for killing her boyfriend Sharon Raj in 2022. The verdict from the court was for 586 pages and had established the crime was so heinous that no mitigating circumstances would be considered.
The case involved the brutal killing of Raj, a native of Parassala in the Thiruvananthapuram district, which shook the region. According to the prosecution, the murder was premeditated and had personal grievances behind it.
Greeshma, a student who did not have a criminal record, had pleaded that she be let off lightly. She had come out with all her academic accolades and being the only daughter of her parents. The court, however said that the offense was too heavy to be compounded by her personal circumstance.
Besides Greeshma, the third accused, Nirmalakumaran Nair, uncle to the girl, has also been found guilty and sent to three years of imprisonment in jail.
This verdict has caused much debate on justice, deterrence, and the impact of severe criminal actions in society.
