Mahila Samman Yojana : Just a few months shy of the crucial 2025 Assembly elections, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) chief and former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal promised the womenfolk of the national capital a big increase. The AAP-led government launched the Mukhyamantri Mahila Samman Yojana, giving ₹1,000 a month to eligible women. The amount would be increased to ₹2,100 if AAP forms the government again in the Assembly polls, Kejriwal declared.

The Mahila Samman Yojana, which has been sanctioned by the Atishi-led Delhi Cabinet, has already started registration for women who are eligible. “I had promised ₹1,000 per month for women, and I am happy to announce that CM Atishi’s cabinet has officially approved the scheme. Now women can register and begin availing themselves of this benefit,” said Kejriwal.

A Promise for the Future

The elections to the 70-member Delhi Assembly are slated for February 2025, with official dates yet to be announced by the Election Commission. Kejriwal emphasized that the scheme’s monthly aid would increase to ₹2,100 if AAP is voted back to power. As said by Kejriwal while making the declaration -“This is just the start. Should AAP regain power, this monetary aid will be hiked to ₹2,100 per month.

All throughout, our aim was only this—empowerment of Delhi’s women”. Kejriwal also spoke of bureaucratic delays that had delayed the roll-out of the scheme, saying, “I wanted to implement this earlier, but obstacles and false cases were created to hinder our efforts. Despite this, we are committed to serving the people of Delhi.”

Mahila Samman Yojana : Eligibility Criteria for the Scheme

Women have to meet the following eligibility criteria to benefit from the scheme: They should be registered voters in Delhi. They should not be income-tax payers. They should not be getting any benefits under any other government scheme. They should be above 18 years of age. They should not be government employees or pensioners.

Women eligible for the scheme will need to submit a self-declaration form during the registration process.

The Aam Aadmi Party, which had come to power in 2015 with a historic victory of 67 out of 70 seats, retained its dominance in 2020 with 63 seats. The party is now seeking a third consecutive term in office.

Presented during Delhi Budget 2024-25 with a sizeable sum allocated ₹2,000 cror, the Mahila Samman Yojana. Media reports have it, that budgetary constraints by Finance Department has delayed rolling of its launch.

According to the final electoral roll published in January 2024, Delhi has 67,30,371 female voters who could potentially benefit from the scheme. The initiative is expected to play a crucial role in influencing voter sentiment ahead of the Assembly polls.

The announcement underscores the focus of AAP on social welfare, trying to fortify its appeal among the women voter base-a significant demographic in its electoral strategy.
