Jumped Deposit Scam: The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has completely denied reports about unauthorized transactions and fraudulent activities in the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) platform. It assured that UPI was a secure and reliable payment system. In recent times, with the so-called “Jumped Deposit Scam,” NPCI said that no unauthorized access to any user account had been detected, and stringent security protocols were there to protect the users from any fraudulent activity.
UPI: A Secure, Device-Based Platform
NPCI emphasized that UPI is a device-based payment platform and very tightly integrated with the registered mobile number and specific mobile device. The transaction will be initiated by the account holder, who would need explicit action on the user’s part along with the UPI PIN for an authorization process. No third party can withdraw any money from any account or initiate a transaction from any user’s account without their consent.
“UPI transactions require intentional actions from the user. Opening a UPI or banking app alone does not initiate a payment,” NPCI clarified. “Each transaction requires an explicit action, such as approving a payment request and entering the UPI PIN. Without explicit user consent, no payment can take place.”
Advanced Security Framework
Strong security features of UPI are controlled by strong regulatory oversight, with real-time processing and interoperability. The safety aspect has ensured that UPI transactions are faster, more convenient, and considerably safer. According to NPCI, high security standards and proactive measures of UPI have ensured digital payments in India are both accessible and secure.
Jumped Deposit Scam
Recent advisories by the authorities, including the Tamil Nadu police, have brought to light a deceptive modus operandi adopted by fraudsters. In the “Jumped Deposit Scam,” fraudsters deposit small amounts of money into a victim’s account and then send fraudulent requests to “collect money.” Victims, noticing the unexpected deposit, are often tricked into entering their UPI PIN under the pretense of validating the transaction, inadvertently authorizing the transfer of funds from their account.
NPCI’s User Safety Tips
NPCI has laid down proper guidelines for its users to help them avoid possible frauds:
- Inform Your Bank about Unverified Deposits: In case an unverified deposit comes into your account, you must inform the bank about the same for verification.
- Avoid Unauthorized Payment Approvals and UPI PIN Entering: Do not accept a payment request or enter your UPI PIN for any payment request that you do not originate or verify.
- Quick Reporting: In case of suspected fraud, promptly report the incident to the nearest cybercrime police station or the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal at www.cybercrime.gov.in.
A Call for Vigilance
NPCI emphasized the importance of user awareness in maintaining the integrity of digital payment systems. While UPI’s advanced security framework offers robust protection, users must exercise caution and vigilance to avoid falling victim to scams.
UPI builds a secure user-friendly digital payments ecosystem that creates further financial inclusiveness and also redefines India’s payment map. The body has assured users through the statement above that it’s still committed towards increasing security and upholding emerging issues that are faced by public regarding trust in these digital transactions as well.
