A fresh controversy has erupted within sections of the Nihang Sikh community after intimate photographs allegedly involving Nihang figure Jasdeep Singh circulated on social media, prompting public criticism from fellow Nihang activist Vicky Thomas Singh and triggering a wider debate over religious identity, personal conduct and accountability within traditional Sikh institutions.
The dispute unfolded publicly after Vicky Thomas Singh uploaded a video on Instagram in which he confronted Jasdeep Singh over photographs that had begun circulating online. During the exchange, Vicky asked Jasdeep directly whether he was the individual appearing in the images alongside another man. Jasdeep reportedly acknowledged that the photographs were genuine and admitted during the conversation that his actions were wrong.
The exchange quickly gained traction across Sikh social media circles, not merely because of the photographs themselves but because of the religious and symbolic roles both individuals occupy within the Nihang community. Vicky argued that the issue extended beyond private conduct and entered the realm of religious accountability because Jasdeep publicly represented himself as a Nihang Sikh and regularly appeared in traditional attire while participating in community and political campaigns.
During the video conversation, Vicky insisted that the matter should not be dismissed as a personal mistake. He accused Jasdeep of bringing disrepute to Sikh traditions while simultaneously projecting himself as a religious figure. According to Vicky, anyone publicly carrying the identity and symbolism associated with the Nihang order carries additional responsibilities in the eyes of the community.
The controversy comes at a particularly sensitive time because Jasdeep Singh had only recently emerged as a prominent face during tensions involving Nihang Sikhs and authorities in Uttarakhand. Earlier this month, an altercation in Chamoli district involving Nihang Sikhs returning from Hemkund Sahib attracted national attention after videos surfaced showing swords being drawn during a dispute reportedly linked to motorcycle parking in Karanprayag market.
Police subsequently arrested four Nihangs and one local resident following the confrontation. The arrests triggered protests and mobilization among sections of the Nihang community, with Jasdeep becoming one of the leading voices demanding the release of those detained.
Videos circulating at the time showed Jasdeep announcing plans to move towards the Uttarakhand border with a large group of Nihang supporters if authorities failed to act on their demands. His statements and public appearances transformed him into a recognizable figure in the developing standoff between protesters and the administration.
The situation eventually de-escalated after discussions between Nihang representatives and senior Uttarakhand officials led to the formation of a Special Investigation Team to examine the incident. The dispute eased further after the arrested Nihangs secured bail from a Chamoli court, allowing the protest movement to wind down without further escalation.
Against that backdrop, the latest controversy has generated even greater attention because it involves a figure who had recently projected himself as a defender of community interests and religious values.
Vicky Thomas Singh also levelled additional allegations against Jasdeep, accusing him of collecting money from supporters while travelling to Uttarakhand and sharing payment details for donations linked to the campaign surrounding the arrested Nihangs. He urged followers not to contribute financially to Jasdeep, alleging that religious identity and symbolism were being used for personal gain.
Perhaps the strongest demand made by Vicky concerned religious accountability. He publicly called on Jasdeep to appear before the Panj Pyare, the collective body traditionally regarded as the highest temporal authority in Sikh religious discipline, and seek guidance regarding the controversy. According to Vicky, he had previously advised Jasdeep privately to do so but claimed those appeals went unanswered.
The debate has also brought renewed public attention to Vicky Thomas Singh himself, a figure whose journey into Sikh activism has attracted considerable discussion over recent years. Originally born into a Christian family, Vicky later embraced Sikhism and adopted the identity of a Nihang Sikh while retaining “Thomas” as part of his name.
He first came into broader public view during the farmers’ protests of 2020 and 2021 and has since maintained an active presence on social media platforms where he frequently comments on issues involving Sikh identity, politics and religious controversies.
His public profile has often intersected with contentious events. He reportedly appeared in videos linked to protests against actor and politician Kangana Ranaut over her film “Emergency” and has previously faced scrutiny following clashes involving rival Nihang groups near the Golden Temple complex.
Political observers have also noted his appearances alongside senior Congress leaders at public events, while his presence during the events surrounding the Red Fort violence on Republic Day in 2021 further increased his visibility in national discussions concerning Sikh activism and protest movements.
Meanwhile, Jasdeep’s public life continues to draw attention beyond the online controversy. Only days after returning from Uttarakhand, a welcome event organised for Nihangs in Mohali reportedly descended into chaos when a man attempted to attack him with a sword during the gathering.
Supporters present at the venue quickly intervened and restrained the individual before police arrived. Authorities later indicated that the man appeared to be mentally unwell, though investigations into the incident continued.
