A fresh controversy has surfaced at the revered temple complex of Jageshwar Dham after a security guard accompanying Avinash Singh allegedly entered the sanctum sanctorum carrying a firearm. The incident has triggered strong reactions from temple priests and local devotees, who say the act goes against long-standing temple traditions.

The district magistrate had reportedly arrived at the temple for darshan and prayers. However, the situation became controversial when his armed gunman walked into the temple’s inner sanctum with a carbine. Photographs of the security personnel standing inside the sacred area with the weapon soon surfaced on social media and quickly drew criticism from members of the temple community.
For the priests serving at Jageshwar Dham, the issue is not about security but about respecting religious customs. According to them, the sanctum is considered the holiest part of the temple and strict discipline is maintained there. Carrying weapons inside the sacred chamber is seen as a violation of these traditions.
Several priests, including Naveen Chandra Bhatt, Manoj Bhatt and Basant Bhatt, expressed their displeasure over the incident. They said that even during visits by prominent political leaders and senior officials in the past, security personnel never entered the sanctum with weapons.
Local residents and members of the temple community have also supported the priests’ concerns. They argue that the temple complex remains peaceful and secure, making the presence of firearms inside the sanctum unnecessary. Many believe that administrative protocol should not override religious traditions in such sacred spaces.
Temple authorities have now called for clear guidelines to prevent similar incidents in the future. The chief priest and Mahamandaleshwar, Hemant Bhatt, said that such situations raise serious questions about respecting the sanctity of temples. He urged authorities, including the Archaeological Survey of India, to ensure that temple traditions are protected during visits by VIPs and government officials.
The incident has once again brought attention to the broader debate around VIP culture in religious places. Many devotees believe that rules inside temples should remain the same for everyone, regardless of their position or status.
