An Indian student from Karnataka has gone missing in the United States, sparking concern among his family and raising broader questions about the safety of Indian students studying abroad. Saketh Sreenivasaiah, a postgraduate student enrolled at University of California, Berkeley, has reportedly been untraceable since Monday. Authorities in the US are investigating the matter, while Indian diplomatic officials are closely following the developments.
Saketh Sreenivasaiah had travelled to the United States to pursue higher education, carrying the aspirations of his family back home in Karnataka. His sudden disappearance has left them anxious and desperate for answers. According to official information, he was last seen earlier this week, and efforts are underway to determine the circumstances surrounding his disappearance.
The Consulate General of India, San Francisco confirmed through a statement on social media platform X that it is in regular contact with Saketh’s family. The case has also drawn attention in India’s Parliament. During a discussion on the safety of Indian nationals overseas, Asaduddin Owaisi raised concerns about the protection and security of Indian students studying in foreign countries. In response, the Ministry of External Affairs reiterated that the government gives the highest priority to the safety and well-being of Indian students abroad.
The Ministry stated that whenever incidents of violence, discrimination, or distress involving Indian students are reported, Indian embassies and consulates immediately take up the matter with local authorities to ensure proper investigation and action. Officials emphasized that missions abroad maintain regular contact with students and conduct orientation sessions to make them aware of potential risks and safety precautions.
Students are encouraged to stay connected with Indian missions through the MADAD portal, WhatsApp groups, consular camps, open houses, and emergency helplines. The government further noted that in countries facing political or economic challenges, Indian missions remain particularly vigilant. They provide assistance such as medical support, temporary accommodation, and other essential services when required.
While the United States continues to be one of the most preferred destinations for Indian students seeking higher education, isolated incidents over the years have occasionally raised concerns about safety, discrimination, and timely response from authorities. Such cases often prompt renewed discussions about support systems available to students far from home.
At present, US authorities have not released detailed information regarding the circumstances of Saketh’s disappearance.
