Chandigarh, August 26, 2025 – The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for heavy to very heavy rainfall in Chandigarh, Punjab, and Haryana on Wednesday. The fresh spell of intense showers is likely to impact the region significantly, with authorities urging residents to stay cautious.
Orange and Yellow Alerts Issued
According to the IMD, an orange alert has been sounded for August 27, while a yellow alert has been issued for August 28. Meteorologists added that the monsoon, which remained vigorous over the past 24 hours, is expected to calm down briefly after Thursday. However, another round of showers is predicted on August 31, for which a yellow alert has already been announced.

“Monsoon was vigorous over Chandigarh, Punjab, and Haryana during the last 24 hours. Heavy to very heavy rainfall occurred at isolated places across Punjab and Haryana, while extremely heavy showers lashed Gurdaspur and Fatehabad districts,” the IMD said in its bulletin.
Rainfall Predictions for the Region
The weather department has predicted that widespread rainfall activity will continue for the next 12–24 hours before gradually decreasing.
- August 26 – Light to moderate rain at most places.
- August 27–28 – Showers at a few locations in Chandigarh, Punjab, and Haryana.
- From August 29 – Another spell of moderate to heavy rain expected in parts of Punjab and Haryana.
The Tricity region (Chandigarh, Mohali, and Panchkula) will likely experience a generally cloudy sky with thunderstorms and rain till August 31.
Temperature and Rainfall Records
Despite the rainfall, the dip in mercury during the day was negligible. On Tuesday, the maximum temperature was recorded at:
- Chandigarh – 29.9°C
- Mohali – 29.8°C
- Panchkula – 30.1°C
The minimum temperature stood at 24.4°C in Chandigarh, 24.6°C in Mohali, and 25°C in Panchkula. Interestingly, while Chandigarh and Mohali witnessed a rise in night temperatures, Panchkula saw a marginal dip of 0.1°C compared to the previous night.
In terms of rainfall:
- Mohali received 19.5 mm,
- Chandigarh recorded 12.4 mm,
- Panchkula saw just 0.5 mm of showers.
Meanwhile, relative humidity rose to 96%, adding discomfort to the region’s weather conditions.
What Residents Should Expect
Residents across the Tricity and neighboring states should brace for intermittent heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and waterlogging in low-lying areas. The IMD has urged citizens to stay updated with official advisories and avoid unnecessary travel during peak rainfall hours.
The day temperatures are expected to remain around 33°C, while night temperatures may hover near 23°C over the next five days.
