A routine military flight over Assam turned into a devastating tragedy on Saturday morning when an Indian Air Force AN-32 transport aircraft crashed shortly after taking off from Jorhat Air Force Station, claiming the lives of five Air Force personnel, including Squadron Leader Prashant Singh of Dehradun.

The aircraft was on a scheduled sortie from Jorhat to Chabua Military Base when it went down around 10 a.m., sending shockwaves through the armed forces community and the families of those on board. Six personnel were travelling in the aircraft at the time of the accident. While one officer survived with injuries and is currently undergoing treatment at a military hospital in Jorhat, five others lost their lives in the line of duty.

The sole survivor, identified as the co-pilot, sustained injuries during the crash but managed to survive the impact. Defence officials said he is receiving specialized medical care and remains under close observation. The AN-32, a twin-engine military transport aircraft, has long served as one of the Indian Air Force’s key logistical workhorses.
