Gurpreet Kaur Rejects Rs 5 Crore Charge, Warns of Legal Action

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s wife, Dr Gurpreet Kaur Mann, has publicly rejected allegations that she demanded Rs 5 crore to help derail a rape case, calling the charge “baseless” and challenging those who made it to prove their claims or face legal action.

Gurpreet Kaur Rejects Rs 5 Crore Charge, Warns of Legal Action

Dr Gurpreet Mann made the remarks in Patiala on Sunday while speaking to mediapersons after attending a Teej function. She was accompanied by Punjab Health Minister Dr Balbir Singh and Punjab Women Commission chairperson Raj Lalli Gill.

The controversy centres on allegations made last week by former Punjab and Haryana High Court judge Justice Ranjit Singh (retd). He alleged that Dr Mann had demanded Rs 5 crore from an accused in a rape case and had purportedly offered to help prevent the case against a businessman from progressing.

Justice Singh also alleged that a close relative of Dr Mann had remained in contact with the accused and had allegedly pressured him to pay the money.

Dr Gurpreet Mann has categorically denied the allegations. She said she was not intimidated by the accusations and demanded that those making them provide evidence to support their claims.

“I am not scared of what allegations they level. I challenge them to prove what they have alleged or face legal action,” she said.

Her remarks mark her first public response to the allegations and come at a time when the issue has developed into a wider political controversy in Punjab. Opposition parties have been seeking answers from the state government and questioning the allegations involving the Chief Minister’s family.

The matter also gained a new dimension after the National Human Rights Commission took cognisance of the allegations. The NHRC asked Punjab’s Chief Secretary and Director General of Police to submit an Action Taken Report within two weeks.

The development prompted an immediate response from the Chief Minister’s Office. According to the statement released by the CMO, Dr Gurpreet Kaur had sent a legal notice to Justice Ranjit Singh over the allegations.

The dispute has therefore moved beyond political accusations and into a potential legal confrontation, with the claims and counterclaims now likely to face closer scrutiny.

The allegations relate to a rape case involving a businessman, although the accusations against Dr Mann have not been established in court. At present, they remain allegations that she has firmly denied.

For the Punjab government, the controversy carries political significance because it directly involves the family of the sitting Chief Minister. Opposition parties have sought clarification, while Dr Mann has maintained that the allegations are part of an attempt to politically target her husband.

Speaking in Patiala, she did not indicate any willingness to let the issue fade away. Instead, her challenge was direct: those making the allegations should prove them or face legal consequences.

The next stage of the controversy could now depend on the evidence presented by the respective sides, the response submitted by Punjab authorities to the NHRC and any legal proceedings arising from the notice issued by Dr Mann.

Until those processes establish otherwise, the allegations remain unproven. Dr Gurpreet Kaur’s position is clear: she has rejected the Rs 5 crore charge as baseless and has warned that those who cannot substantiate their claims could face legal action.

For now, the controversy leaves Punjab politics facing another contentious issue involving allegations, counter-allegations and a demand for evidence.
