Gorakhpur/Azamgarh, April 23 – In a major infrastructure boost for eastern Uttar Pradesh, the much-awaited Gorakhpur Link Expressway, connecting Gorakhpur to the Purvanchal Expressway, is now on the verge of completion. Officials have confirmed that construction work is progressing at a rapid pace and is likely to be completed by May 15, 2025.

Massive Boost to Eastern UP Connectivity
Spanning 91.35 kilometers and built at an estimated cost of ₹7,283 crore, the Gorakhpur Link Expressway is set to drastically reduce travel time between Gorakhpur and Lucknow—bringing it down to just 3.5 to 4 hours.
The expressway starts from Jaitpur near Sahjanwan in Gorakhpur and merges with the Purvanchal Expressway at Salarpur in Azamgarh, forming a seamless high-speed travel corridor across eastern Uttar Pradesh.
Site Visit by Top Officials: Deadline Confirmed
On Tuesday, Commissioner Anil Dhingra and District Magistrate Krishna Karunesh conducted a detailed site inspection at the Kamhariya Ghat bridge over the Ghaghra River. During the visit, officials of the implementing agency assured that all major construction works, including roads and bridges, will be finalized within the next 15 to 20 days.
“The river diversion work may continue, but priority must be given to the completion of road and bridge infrastructure,” said Commissioner Dhingra, stressing the need for timely and quality execution. He warned that accountability will be enforced if any negligence is found at this crucial stage.
Senior officials present included UPDA MD Sanjay Agarwal, ADM Purushottam Das Gupta, and Setu Nigam Project Manager AK Singh.
Inauguration Ceremony: PM Modi or Nitin Gadkari May Lead
Sources indicate that the inauguration of the Gorakhpur Link Expressway could happen in the second half of May, possibly at a grand event on the Gorakhpur-Azamgarh border. There is strong speculation that Prime Minister Narendra Modi or Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari, along with Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, may grace the event.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had recently hinted at this during an event marking eight years of BJP governance in the state, saying, “Very soon, people will start traveling on the Gorakhpur Link Expressway.”
Traffic Already Using the Route
Interestingly, even before the official launch, some vehicular movement has already started on completed stretches of the expressway. This is a testament to the pressing demand for better connectivity in the region.
Once operational, the expressway is expected to fuel economic development, ease logistics, and improve regional connectivity across Gorakhpur, Azamgarh, Ambedkar Nagar, and surrounding districts.
