Gaya city name change: The Bihar government has officially renamed Gaya to Gayaji, honoring its religious and mythological heritage. A Rs 165.44 crore Buddhist Meditation Centre is also planned in Bodh Gaya under the Swadesh Darshan 2.0 scheme.
Patna, May 17, 2025: In a significant move aimed at recognizing the spiritual legacy of Bihar, the state cabinet has officially approved the renaming of the holy city of Gaya to Gayaji. The decision was taken during a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Friday, May 16.
Announcing the development, Dr. S. Siddharth, Additional Chief Secretary of the Cabinet Secretariat Department, stated that this change pays tribute to the city’s deep-rooted mythological, historical, and religious importance, especially among Hindus and Buddhists worldwide.
Why the Name ‘Gayaji’?
Gaya, known for its sacred connection with Lord Vishnu and as a key destination for Pind Daan, holds immense significance in Hindu scriptures. Locals and pilgrims have affectionately referred to it as ‘Gayaji’ for generations. The official renaming aligns the city’s identity with its revered cultural essence.
Major Tourism Boost: Buddhist Centre in Bodh Gaya
Alongside the name change, the cabinet also approved a proposal to set up a Buddhist Meditation and Experience Centre in Bodh Gaya, a globally recognized pilgrimage site where Lord Buddha attained enlightenment.
Funded under the Swadesh Darshan Scheme 2.0, the Centre will be developed with an estimated budget of ₹165.44 crore. The initiative is expected to enhance the spiritual tourism experience, attract international visitors, and provide new employment opportunities for the local population.
Additional Key Decisions by Bihar Cabinet
During the session, the Bihar cabinet approved a total of 69 proposals, including several major public welfare measures:
₹50 Lakh Ex-Gratia for Martyred Soldiers’ Families
Under Operation Sindoor, the state government will provide ₹50 lakh ex-gratia compensation to the families of Armed Forces and Central Armed Forces personnel from Bihar who have lost their lives in service during the India-Pakistan tensions. This move reflects the government’s unwavering respect and support for its brave soldiers.
Dearness Allowance Hiked for Government Employees
In a welcome relief for state employees and pensioners, the Dearness Allowance (DA) has been increased by 2%, moving from 53% to 55%, effective from January 1, 2025. The hike will benefit thousands of government staff covered under the Seventh Pay Commission.
A Step Towards Heritage Preservation and Economic Growth
The renaming of Gaya to Gayaji is not just symbolic—it represents a broader vision of cultural preservation, tourism development, and economic progress. The state government is confident that these initiatives will strengthen Bihar’s position on the global spiritual tourism map while uplifting the local economy.
With the historic renaming of Gaya to Gayaji and the announcement of a world-class Buddhist centre in Bodh Gaya, Bihar is reinforcing its commitment to honoring its ancient heritage while driving forward-looking development. As these projects take shape, the state is set to witness a new chapter in spiritual tourism, infrastructure, and social welfare.
