Earthquakes Strike Andaman & Nicobar Islands and Jammu & Kashmir Within Two Hours

Two moderate earthquakes struck different parts of India within a short span early Monday morning, triggering tremors in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and later in Jammu and Kashmir. Authorities confirmed that there were no immediate reports of casualties or damage from either incident.

Earthquakes Strike Andaman & Nicobar Islands and Jammu & Kashmir Within Two Hours

The first earthquake occurred in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands at around 3:31 am IST on February 2, 2026. According to the National Center for Seismology, the tremor measured 4.6 on the Richter scale and originated at a depth of 10 kilometres. The epicentre was located near the Nicobar Islands at latitude 9.03 degrees north and longitude 92.78 degrees east. Residents in parts of the islands reported mild shaking, but officials said the situation remained calm.

The Andaman and Nicobar Islands fall under Seismic Zone V, the highest risk category in India. The region is among the most seismically active areas in the world and has experienced several powerful earthquakes in the past. The devastating quake of December 26, 2004, which triggered massive tsunami waves, caused widespread destruction and loss of life, leaving a lasting impact on the region’s disaster preparedness systems.

Nearly two hours after the Andaman tremor, another earthquake of similar intensity struck Jammu and Kashmir. The National Center for Seismology said the quake, measuring 4.7 in magnitude, occurred at 5:35 am IST with its epicentre in the Pattan area of Baramulla district. The earthquake also originated at a shallow depth of 10 kilometres, which often leads to stronger surface shaking.

Residents in and around Baramulla felt the tremors, but officials told news agency PTI that there were no reports of injuries or damage to property. Local administration teams continued to monitor the situation as a precautionary measure.

Experts note that shallow earthquakes are generally considered more dangerous than deeper ones because seismic waves reach the surface with greater intensity. However, both earthquakes recorded on Monday were moderate in strength and did not result in any reported damage.

Authorities have urged people in earthquake-prone regions to remain alert, follow safety guidelines, and avoid panic. Disaster management agencies continue to keep a close watch on seismic activity across sensitive zones in the country.
