A shocking daylight shooting near PGI Chandigarh has left residents shaken after a cashier was gunned down inside a busy medical store in Sector 11 on Friday. The brazen attack, captured on CCTV cameras, unfolded within seconds and has once again raised serious concerns about public safety in one of the city’s prominent sectors.
According to preliminary information, the incident took place at Shri Kumar Medical Store located in Sector 11, close to the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGI). Two unidentified men reportedly entered the shop under the guise of customers. What initially appeared to be a routine visit quickly turned into a deadly act of violence that left one man dead and witnesses in shock.
Investigators said the assailants walked into the store and approached the counter before suddenly pulling out an automatic weapon. Without any apparent warning, they allegedly opened fire directly at the cashier. CCTV footage from inside the premises reportedly shows a rapid burst of gunfire, with multiple rounds discharged in nearly a second.
The victim was identified as 45-year-old Janaki Dass, a resident of Rohru in Himachal Pradesh’s Shimla district. He was working at the medical store when he came under attack. Despite the swift response from those present, he succumbed to his injuries at the scene. The intensity of the firing left little opportunity for intervention, highlighting the calculated and sudden nature of the assault.
Eyewitnesses described scenes of panic as customers and staff members scrambled for safety after hearing the gunshots. Some reportedly rushed out of the store, while others took cover inside nearby establishments. The attackers fled immediately after the shooting, disappearing from the area before law enforcement officials could reach the scene.
The CCTV footage is expected to play a crucial role in the investigation. Security cameras reportedly captured the movements of the suspects from the moment they entered the shop until their escape. Investigators are now examining the footage frame by frame in an effort to identify the attackers, trace their route, and determine whether they received assistance before or after the crime.
Police teams rushed to the location soon after receiving information about the shooting. The area was secured, forensic experts were called in, and evidence was collected from the crime scene. Officers also began questioning employees, nearby shopkeepers, and potential witnesses who may have seen the suspects before or after the attack.
While authorities have not yet publicly disclosed a motive, investigators are exploring multiple angles, including personal enmity, targeted killing, financial disputes, and other criminal links. The precision and speed of the attack have led many to believe that the assailants may have specifically targeted the victim rather than carrying out a random act of violence.
The incident has sparked concern among traders and residents in Chandigarh, particularly because the shooting occurred in a busy commercial area during regular business hours. Sector 11, located near one of North India’s most important medical institutions, witnesses significant daily movement of patients, attendants, students, and local residents. A violent attack in such a location has naturally raised questions about security and the increasing boldness of armed criminals.
Local business owners expressed shock over the killing, with many stating that such incidents create fear among shopkeepers and employees who spend long hours at their workplaces. Several traders have called for increased police patrolling, stronger surveillance systems, and quicker preventive measures to deter criminal activity.
The death of Janaki Dass has also sent waves of grief through his native region in Himachal Pradesh. Family members and acquaintances are struggling to come to terms with the sudden loss. Those who knew him described him as a hardworking individual who had been earning a livelihood through his job at the medical store.
As the investigation progresses, police are expected to release additional details regarding the suspects, possible motives, and any breakthroughs in the case. Authorities are also likely to appeal to the public for information that could help identify the gunmen seen in the CCTV footage.
