Amritsar, May 14: In a significant development along the India-Pakistan border, Border Security Force (BSF) jawan Purnam Kumar Shaw was repatriated to India today after being detained by Pakistan Rangers for over 20 days. The jawan had inadvertently crossed over into Pakistan’s territory on April 23 and was held in custody since then.
The handover took place at around 10:30 AM at the Joint Check Post (JCP) at Attari-Wagah in Punjab. The repatriation process was conducted in a peaceful and coordinated manner, in accordance with established military and diplomatic protocols.
According to BSF officials, Shaw was deployed on ‘Kisan Guard’ duty near the Jalloke Border Outpost along the Indo-Pak border when the incident occurred. Sources reveal that he was part of an advance party replacing the outgoing 182 Battalion, which had recently relocated from the area. Due to the unfamiliarity with the terrain, Shaw is believed to have unintentionally crossed the international border.
Despite multiple initial requests from BSF for a flag meeting, the Pakistan Rangers were unresponsive. However, continuous diplomatic and military backchannel communications eventually led to today’s successful return of the soldier.
BSF Confirms Safe Return
“Today, BSF Jawan Purnam Kumar Shaw was handed over to India at 10:30 AM through the Attari-Wagah Joint Check Post,” confirmed a BSF spokesperson. “The handover was peaceful and adhered to all established protocols.”
The jawan is now undergoing standard debriefing and medical examination procedures. Preliminary reports suggest he is in stable health and has not suffered any major physical harm.
This incident has once again highlighted the challenges and unpredictability faced by personnel stationed along the international borders. Miscommunication, challenging terrain, and a high-stress environment often contribute to such inadvertent crossings.
The BSF has assured that internal reviews are underway to assess the circumstances that led to this incident. Additional training and orientation may be provided to ensure that newly deputed personnel are better acquainted with the operational areas.
This handover marks a positive gesture in India-Pakistan military communications, even amid strained bilateral relations. While routine flag meetings and communication protocols exist, cases involving personnel inadvertently crossing the border are sensitive and require careful handling.
The safe return of BSF jawan Purnam Kumar Shaw has brought relief to his family, colleagues, and the nation at large. As he returns to duty, his experience underscores the importance of vigilance, preparation, and ongoing diplomacy in managing complex border dynamics.
