Former BJP legislator Suresh Rathore was arrested on Monday in a significant development linked to the ongoing controversy surrounding the Ankita Bhandari murder case, a tragedy that continues to cast a long shadow over Uttarakhand politics nearly four years after the young receptionist’s death shocked the state.
Police officials confirmed that Rathore was taken into custody following an investigation into a viral audio-video clip that allegedly contained claims regarding the identity of a “VIP” figure connected to the high-profile case. The arrest marks the latest chapter in a politically sensitive controversy that has reignited public debate over transparency, accountability, and the handling of one of Uttarakhand’s most closely watched criminal cases.
According to Superintendent of Police (City) Pramod Kumar, Rathore was detained from his office in Buggawala in Haridwar district before being brought to Dalanwala police station in Dehradun, where he was formally arrested. The police action comes after months of legal proceedings and scrutiny surrounding the circulation of content that authorities say may have violated the law.
The former BJP MLA had recently appeared before the media and claimed partial legal relief from the Uttarakhand High Court. During a press conference held three days before his arrest, Rathore stated that the court had quashed two of the four First Information Reports registered against him in connection with the circulation of the controversial material.
Those FIRs, lodged at Bahadrabad and Jhabrera police stations, were set aside by the court on June 4. However, the High Court allowed investigations to continue in two other cases registered at Dalanwala and Nehru Colony police stations, keeping the legal spotlight firmly on Rathore.
At the center of the dispute is the circulation of audio and video clips on social media that allegedly sought to identify a “VIP” whose name became the subject of intense public speculation after the murder of Ankita Bhandari. The issue has remained politically explosive because opposition parties, activists, and sections of the public have repeatedly demanded greater transparency regarding allegations that influential individuals may have been connected to events surrounding the case.
Among the complainants are Dushyant Gautam and Aarti Gaur, who have argued that the circulated material was intended to damage their reputation. Gautam, a senior BJP leader and the party’s Uttarakhand in-charge, was allegedly named by Rathore as the individual referred to as the “VIP” in the material that surfaced online.
Rathore has consistently denied wrongdoing. Speaking to reporters in Haridwar on Friday, he rejected allegations that he had released any audio or video clips on social media. He also denied making derogatory remarks against senior BJP leaders or the state’s chief minister. While maintaining his innocence, Rathore expressed regret if any of his statements had caused distress and claimed that efforts were being made to undermine his political career.
“I am cooperating with the investigation,” Rathore had said, emphasizing that he was willing to assist authorities as inquiries into the remaining cases continued.
The political controversy intensified further over the weekend when Uttarakhand minister Deshraj Karnwal publicly challenged Rathore’s interpretation of the High Court’s order. Karnwal described Rathore’s claims regarding legal relief as misleading, arguing that the ongoing investigations demonstrated that the matter remained far from resolved.
The arrest has once again brought national attention back to the Ankita Bhandari case, which sparked widespread outrage across Uttarakhand in September 2022. Ankita, a 19-year-old receptionist employed at a resort in Pauri district, disappeared under mysterious circumstances before her body was recovered days later. The case triggered massive public protests, candlelight marches, and demands for justice across the state.
Public anger intensified after allegations emerged that Ankita had faced pressure from individuals connected to the resort before her death. The investigation ultimately led to the arrest of three men, including the resort owner. Following a lengthy judicial process, all three were convicted for their roles in her murder, bringing a measure of closure to a case that had deeply shaken public confidence.
Despite those convictions, questions surrounding the alleged “VIP” reference have continued to fuel political controversy and public curiosity. For many observers, the issue represents more than a legal dispute over social media content. It reflects a broader struggle over accountability in high-profile criminal cases and the responsibilities of political leaders when making public allegations.

Read MoreRathore’s arrest is therefore likely to resonate far beyond the courtroom. As investigators continue examining the remaining FIRs and the circumstances surrounding the viral clips, the case is expected to remain a focal point of political debate in Uttarakhand. The outcome could influence not only Rathore’s political future but also public perceptions of how sensitive and politically charged investigations are handled in the state.
With legal proceedings now entering a new phase, attention will remain fixed on the evidence gathered by investigators and the decisions that follow in a case that continues to command public interest long after the tragic death that first brought it into the national spotlight.
