BCCI Orders KKR to Release Mustafizur Rahman Ahead of IPL 2026

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has directed Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to release Bangladesh fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman from their squad ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season. The decision comes at a time when diplomatic relations between India and Bangladesh remain strained, and the issue has now spilled over into the world of cricket.

BCCI Orders KKR to Release Mustafizur Rahman Ahead of IPL 2026

KKR had signed the 30-year-old left-arm pacer for ₹9.20 crore during the IPL auction last month after a fierce bidding war involving Chennai Super Kings and Delhi Capitals. His base price was ₹2 crore, but his proven IPL experience pushed the final amount much higher. However, despite the franchise’s plans to bring him on board for the upcoming season, the deal has now been cancelled following the BCCI’s directive.

BCCI Allows KKR to Sign a Replacement

Confirming the development, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia said the board has formally asked Kolkata Knight Riders to release Mustafizur Rahman. He added that KKR will be permitted to request a replacement player if required, and the BCCI will approve such a move. When asked about the reason behind the decision, Saikia referred to “recent developments all across,” indicating that the issue goes beyond cricket.

Political Pressure Behind the Decision

The pressure on the BCCI had been mounting in recent weeks over Rahman’s participation in the IPL amid growing political tensions between the two countries. Concerns have been raised in India following reports of violence against minorities in Bangladesh, including the killing of a Hindu man, which led to strong reactions from political leaders and sections of the public. Several leaders criticised the inclusion of a Bangladeshi player in the IPL at a time when bilateral relations are under stress.

The controversy also brought attention to KKR’s ownership, particularly actor Shah Rukh Khan, who is a co-owner of the franchise. Some critics questioned the decision to sign Rahman, arguing that it was insensitive given the current political and social situation in Bangladesh.

Mustafizur’s IPL Journey Cut Short

Mustafizur Rahman has been a regular presence in the IPL since making his debut in 2016. Over the years, he has represented multiple franchises, including Sunrisers Hyderabad, Mumbai Indians, Delhi Capitals, Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals. The upcoming season was set to be his first with Kolkata Knight Riders, making his sudden exit even more significant for both the player and the franchise.

India-Bangladesh Cricket Ties Under Strain

The move comes at a time when cricketing ties between India and Bangladesh are already uncertain. A scheduled white-ball series between the two teams was postponed last year, and while the Bangladesh Cricket Board has proposed hosting it later this year, the BCCI has not committed to the plan, citing concerns over the political situation in Bangladesh.

Relations between the two countries deteriorated after the ouster of former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who fled to India last year following large-scale anti-government protests. The new interim administration led by Muhammad Yunus has taken a different diplomatic approach, including engaging more closely with Pakistan, which has further complicated regional dynamics. Both countries have also summoned each other’s diplomats over security and political issues.

Against this backdrop, the BCCI’s decision to ask KKR to release Mustafizur Rahman reflects how geopolitical developments are beginning to influence sporting events. While the IPL has traditionally remained a platform that brings together international players, the current situation shows that political realities cannot always be kept separate from the game.

Kolkata Knight Riders are now expected to look for a suitable replacement as they continue their preparations for the 2026 IPL season.
