The Punjab Government on Friday transferred Amritsar Commissioner of Police Gurpreet Singh Bhullar, barely a day after a major controversy erupted over social media posts that appeared to link protesters at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar with a Pakistan ISI-backed terror module recently busted by the Amritsar Commissionerate Police.
The decision came amid growing debate over the interpretation of Bhullar’s remarks during an August 4 press conference. While the Punjab Police maintained that the officer’s original statement had been taken out of context through selectively edited videos, the controversy quickly gained momentum online, prompting the government to make an administrative change.
Bhullar has now been directed to report to the office of the Director General of Police (DGP), Punjab. In the interim, Border Range DIG Harmanbir Singh Gill has been assigned the additional charge of Commissioner of Police, Amritsar.

The spokesperson emphasized that the Commissioner never claimed the accused had participated in the protest, nor did he suggest that the protesters themselves had any links with the terror module.
“The audio and factual content of the press conference were not morphed. However, selective trimming along with misleading captions distorted the context of the statement,” the police clarified.
The department stressed that the investigation focused on the activities of the arrested terror suspects rather than on the protesters assembled at Jantar Mantar.
