Sandhya Theatre Tragedy: Actor Allu Arjun was questioned by Hyderabad police on Tuesday in connection with the tragic stampede that broke out at Sandhya Theatre when his new film Pushpa 2: The Rule was being screened for premiere on December 4. In the tragedy, one woman Revathi died while her child Sri Tej suffered injuries.
The actor reached the Chikkadpally Police Station at 11 a.m. as ordered by the authorities. Sources say that the police asked Arjun to cooperate with the investigation and questioned him on several crucial points related to the incident.
The questions included:
Whether the actor knew that police permission had been denied for him to attend the premiere.
Identity of the person or group of persons who had decided to go ahead with the plan despite the denial of permission.
Whether any police officer had informed him about the stampede occurring outside the venue.
When he came to know about the death of Revathi and the sequence of events on December 4.
The Incident
On the opening day, a huge crowd was seen to catch a glimpse of the star. When Allu Arjun began greeting fans from the sunroof of his car, excitement soon turned into a stampede. Revathi died in the stampede, and her injured child was left behind. Allu Arjun was taken into custody for a short period and later let out on bail after posting a ₹50,000 bond.
The producers of Pushpa 2, Naveen Yerneni and Ravi Shankar, extended financial assistance to the bereaved family by handing over a ₹50 lakh cheque in the presence of Telangana Minister Komatireddy Venkat Reddy at KIMS Hospital.
Protests at Allu Arjun’s Residence
The tragedy took a new turn on December 22 when a group of protestors, allegedly from the Osmania University Joint Action Committee (OU-JAC), stormed Allu Arjun’s residence. Demanding justice for Revathi, the group held placards, shouted slogans, and damaged property.
One protester climbed the compound wall and threw stones, which resulted in a scuffle with the actor’s security personnel. Flower pots on the ramp were broken, and security personnel were said to have been manhandled. Six people were arrested by the police but were released on bail.
Legal and Public Backlash
The Sandhya Theatre tragedy has gained strong criticism over event management and crowd control. People-the fans and critics-alike have been demanding stricter safety protocol regarding the public appearances by a celebrity.
Hyderabad Police continued to investigate to pin the accountability of the incident. On the other hand, Allu Arjun has asserted he will cooperate with legal process.
