New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Thursday released its list of candidates for the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections and a by-election in Odisha, signalling a calculated blend of organisational leadership, regional representation and political outreach as the party looks to consolidate its position in the Upper House.
The candidate list, approved by the BJP’s Central Election Committee, features several prominent names, including party National General Secretary Tarun Chugh from Madhya Pradesh and former Rajasthan BJP president Dr. Satish Poonia from Rajasthan. The announcement comes ahead of the Rajya Sabha elections scheduled for June 18 across multiple states.
One of the most closely watched aspects of the list is the omission of Union Ministers Ravneet Singh Bittu and George Kurian, whose current Rajya Sabha terms are set to end on June 21. While the party has not officially explained the decision, their exclusion has already sparked speculation within political circles about possible changes in the BJP’s parliamentary and organisational strategy in the coming months.
Tarun Chugh’s nomination from Madhya Pradesh is being viewed as a significant move by the BJP leadership. As one of the party’s key national office-bearers, Chugh has played an important role in election management and organisational expansion across several states. His elevation to the Rajya Sabha would strengthen the party’s representation with a leader known for his grassroots connect and strategic political work. The BJP has also fielded Rajneesh Agrawal from Madhya Pradesh, indicating the party’s confidence in experienced leaders with strong organisational credentials.
In Rajasthan, the BJP has nominated Dr. Alka Gurjar and Dr. Satish Poonia. Poonia remains one of the party’s most influential leaders in the desert state and has been credited with strengthening the BJP’s cadre network during his tenure as state president. His nomination is being interpreted as recognition of his contribution to the party’s growth in Rajasthan. Dr. Alka Gurjar’s candidature, meanwhile, reflects the BJP’s effort to broaden social representation and strengthen its outreach among different communities.
Gujarat, a state that continues to be a BJP stronghold, will see four party candidates entering the Rajya Sabha race. The BJP has nominated Rajubhai Shukla, Mukeshbhai Rathwa, Mansingh Parmar and Jitendra Meghjibhai Kanzariya. Political observers believe the selection reflects a careful balancing of regional and social factors while ensuring representation from different sections of society.
The party has also turned its attention to the Northeast, a region that has gained increasing political significance over the past decade. In Arunachal Pradesh, the BJP has named Tai Tagak as its candidate, while A. Sharda Devi has been chosen from Manipur. Both nominations underline the party’s continued emphasis on strengthening its presence in the strategically important northeastern states.
For the Rajya Sabha by-election in Odisha, the BJP has fielded Debashish Samantaray, a former Biju Janata Dal (BJD) leader who recently joined the saffron party. Samantaray had earlier represented Odisha in the Rajya Sabha before resigning from both the Upper House and the BJD. His nomination is being seen as a significant political move that could help the BJP deepen its influence in a state where it has steadily expanded its electoral footprint in recent years.
According to the official notification issued by BJP National General Secretary Arun Singh, the party’s candidate selection reflects its broader political approach of combining experienced organisational leaders with individuals who possess strong regional appeal. The nominations also come at a time when the BJP is seeking to maintain its legislative strength in Parliament while preparing for future electoral contests across the country.

The Rajya Sabha elections will be held on June 18 in ten states, including Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Manipur and Arunachal Pradesh. The by-election for a Rajya Sabha seat from Odisha will also take place on the same day. With the numbers largely favouring the BJP and its allies in several states, the elections are expected to further shape the composition of the Upper House ahead of crucial parliamentary sessions.
