A dramatic political moment unfolded in the Assembly of Tamil Nadu on Wednesday as Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay moved a confidence motion to prove the majority of his government. The trust vote is a crucial test for the newly formed administration led by his party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), which came to power after the recent state elections.
The Assembly session began with intense political attention as legislators gathered to witness the first major challenge before the Vijay-led government. Moving the resolution in the House, the Chief Minister sought the support of lawmakers to reaffirm the mandate his party received. The trust vote is being seen as a key moment that will determine the stability of the new government.
During the proceedings, the Indian National Congress openly declared its support for the TVK government. Congress legislators stated that they would back the government during the confidence vote, strengthening Vijay’s position in the Assembly.
Support also came from the Left parties. The Communist Party of India (Marxist) announced in the House that it would vote in favour of the government. Similarly, the Communist Party of India also confirmed its backing. Regional parties such as the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) and the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) have also extended their support to the ruling side.
While announcing its support, VCK also urged the government to introduce legislation against superstition, similar to the laws implemented in Maharashtra and Karnataka. The party said such a step would strengthen social reforms in the state.
In terms of numbers, the ruling TVK has an overall strength of 107 MLAs in the Assembly. However, the Speaker generally does not participate in the voting process during a confidence motion. Additionally, Tirupattur MLA R. Seenivasa Sethupathy from TVK will not be able to cast his vote following a High Court ruling linked to a closely contested election case. Sethupathy had won his seat by a margin of just one vote after defeating a candidate from the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam.
Despite this setback, the government still enjoys additional backing from five Congress MLAs as well as two MLAs each from CPI, CPI(M), VCK and IUML, giving it a stronger footing ahead of the vote.
Meanwhile, the opposition camp has witnessed unexpected divisions. A group of nearly 30 MLAs from the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam has reportedly expressed support for the Vijay government. The group is said to be led by senior leaders S. P. Velumani and C. Ve. Shanmugam.
However, another faction within AIADMK loyal to party chief Edappadi K. Palaniswami has strongly opposed this move. Leaders from this camp warned that MLAs who vote against the official party line may face action under anti-defection laws.
The internal rift within AIADMK has added another layer of uncertainty to the political developments unfolding in the Assembly. Observers believe the split could significantly influence the outcome of the trust vote.
For Chief Minister Joseph Vijay, the floor test marks an important step in his political journey. After transitioning from a hugely successful film career to politics, Vijay’s leadership is now being tested in the Assembly for the first time. The confidence vote will ultimately decide whether his government begins its term with a clear majority or faces continued political turbulence in the days ahead.
