CBI Raid at Punjab Vigilance Office: BJP Youth Leader Arrested in ₹25 Lakh Bribery Case

A surprise raid by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) at the Punjab Vigilance Bureau office in Mohali has triggered a major controversy in the state’s political and administrative circles. The operation led to the arrest of Raghav Goel, a BJP youth leader who is accused of acting as a middleman in an alleged ₹25 lakh bribery deal.

Investigators say the case revolves around an attempt to settle a vigilance matter through illegal payments. The probe also brought attention to the office of senior IPS officer Sharad Satya Chauhan, who currently heads the vigilance bureau and is considered the senior-most contender for the post of Director General of Police in Punjab.

According to officials familiar with the investigation, the CBI carried out searches at multiple locations. One of the raids took place at a five-star hotel in Chandigarh where investigators reportedly recovered ₹13 lakh in cash. The agency believes the money was part of the alleged bribe deal meant to influence the handling of a corruption-related case.

During the operation, the CBI arrested Raghav Goel, claiming he played the role of a middleman between individuals involved in the deal. Goel has been active in political circles and is associated with the youth wing of the Bharatiya Janata Party. He has often posted photographs with prominent party leaders and had previously shared an invitation to the swearing-in ceremony of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Sources indicate that Goel had connections with several BJP leaders in Punjab, particularly in Bathinda and Malout. However, party insiders say he was not holding any formal position within the organization. Interestingly, just a few days before the raid, his police security cover was reportedly withdrawn, though it remains unclear whether the protection had been provided by central agencies or the Punjab Police.

The investigation has also raised questions because the alleged deal was linked to the office of Sharad Satya Chauhan. Chauhan recently took charge as Director of the Punjab Vigilance Bureau after spending several years away from key postings. He is also among the senior officers whose names were sent to the Union Public Service Commission for consideration in the selection of the next Punjab Director General of Police.

According to investigators, Chauhan’s personal reader has been booked under corruption charges for allegedly facilitating the transaction. The staff member has reportedly been working with the IPS officer for the past five to six years. While a case has been registered against him, he has not yet been arrested.

Responding to the controversy, Sharad Satya Chauhan said he had no involvement in any wrongdoing and cannot be held responsible for the alleged activities of his staff. He maintained that his name has been unnecessarily dragged into the matter and emphasized that he has served with a clean record throughout his career. Chauhan also confirmed that he continued to attend office as usual despite the investigation.

The development has drawn attention in Punjab’s political landscape, where the state government led by Bhagwant Mann of the Aam Aadmi Party has frequently been at odds with opposition parties. In recent months, central agencies such as the CBI and the Enforcement Directorate have carried out investigations involving leaders and officials linked to the state administration.

However, this particular case has attracted attention because it involves a person associated with the BJP rather than members of the ruling government. Political observers believe the investigation could add a new dimension to the ongoing political debate in the state.

The CBI has continued its probe and is also conducting searches at Goel’s residence in Malout while examining financial transactions and communication records related to the alleged deal. Officials say the investigation is still in its early stages and more details are likely to emerge as the inquiry progresses.
