A devastating explosion at a firecracker manufacturing unit in Tamil Nadu’s Virudhunagar district on Sunday left at least 18 people dead and several others seriously injured, turning what began as a normal workday into a scene of chaos and tragedy.
The explosion took place at the Vanaja fireworks factory in Kattanarpatti, a village located near Virudhunagar and within the limits of the Vachakarapatti police station. According to police officials, workers were reportedly handling raw materials and finishing firecrackers when a sudden and powerful blast ripped through part of the factory complex.
The impact of the explosion was so intense that multiple rooms inside the facility were completely destroyed. Walls collapsed, debris scattered across the compound, and thick smoke filled the air as flames spread rapidly through the premises.
Rescue teams rushed to the site soon after the incident, but their efforts were complicated by the presence of stored firecrackers that continued to explode long after the initial blast. Firefighters had to proceed with extreme caution as bursts of crackers and flames made it difficult to approach the damaged structures.
Officials confirmed that 18 bodies have been recovered so far, many of them charred beyond recognition due to the severity of the fire. Six others sustained serious injuries and were immediately taken to the Virudhunagar Government Medical College Hospital for treatment. According to preliminary information from the police, several of the injured workers are in critical condition, including three women who reportedly suffered more than 60 percent burn injuries.
Authorities fear that the death toll may rise as rescue teams continue to sift through the rubble to check if more workers are trapped beneath the debris. At the time of the explosion, more than 100 labourers were believed to be working inside different sections of the fireworks manufacturing unit.
Initial reports suggest that the factory had a valid license issued by the Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organisation (PESO), the regulatory authority responsible for overseeing the storage and handling of explosive materials in India. However, investigators are now examining whether all required safety procedures were being followed and what exactly triggered the deadly blast.
The tragedy has drawn reactions from leaders across the country. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. K. Stalin expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives and said the news of the explosion had caused immense grief. He directed state ministers to immediately reach the site to monitor rescue operations and ensure assistance for the victims’ families. The chief minister also instructed district officials to coordinate relief efforts and provide necessary support to those affected.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also conveyed his condolences, calling the incident deeply distressing and expressing sympathy for the families who lost their loved ones. He also wished a speedy recovery for those injured in the accident.
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said the tragedy was heartbreaking, noting that the victims were workers who had left their homes simply to earn a livelihood for their families. Union Home Minister Amit Shah also expressed grief over the loss of lives.
Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu’s Leader of Opposition Edappadi K. Palaniswami criticised the state government and raised concerns about safety standards in firecracker factories. He said such accidents have become increasingly frequent in recent years and called for stricter safety enforcement.
Virudhunagar district is widely known as one of India’s major hubs for firecracker production, with thousands of workers employed in the industry. However, the sector has often been under scrutiny because of recurring accidents linked to the handling of highly explosive materials.
This latest tragedy comes just days after another explosion in the Vembakottai area of the same district, where four people were killed in a similar firecracker factory accident. The repeated incidents have once again highlighted the urgent need for stronger safety measures and stricter monitoring of fireworks manufacturing units.
Police and forensic teams are expected to conduct a detailed investigation to determine the exact cause of the explosion. Officials will examine whether negligence, improper storage of chemicals, or a technical error led to the blast.
