Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces, Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has triggered a fresh diplomatic controversy after making a series of unusual remarks directed at Turkey on social media. The statements, posted on his personal account, quickly attracted global attention and sparked debate about diplomatic conduct by senior military officials.

Kainerugaba claimed that Turkey should pay Uganda $1 billion as compensation for the country’s long-standing military role in maintaining stability in Somalia. According to him, Ugandan troops have played a crucial role in securing Somalia for years while other nations have benefited economically from investments and infrastructure projects in the region.
Ugandan forces have been deployed in Somalia as part of African Union peacekeeping missions for nearly two decades. Their main objective has been to combat the militant group Al-Shabaab, which has carried out numerous attacks across the region. Kainerugaba argued that while countries such as Turkey have gained economic opportunities in Somalia, Uganda has carried the burden of maintaining security through its soldiers.
In a series of posts, the Ugandan army chief warned that if his demands were ignored, Uganda could reconsider its diplomatic relationship with Turkey. He even suggested that Uganda might close Turkey’s embassy in Kampala within 30 days. In another statement, he advised Ugandan citizens to avoid travelling to Turkey, citing safety concerns, although he did not provide further details.
The controversy deepened after Kainerugaba made a personal remark asking Turkey to offer him “the most beautiful woman in the country” as a wife. The comment quickly spread across social media platforms and drew criticism from many users who described it as inappropriate for a senior military leader.
Kainerugaba also voiced strong support for Israel, saying he would be willing to deploy up to 100,000 Ugandan troops to defend what he described as the “Holy Land.” His statement added another layer to the ongoing debate about his outspoken social media presence.
The Ugandan general is no stranger to controversy. In 2022, he made headlines when he publicly offered 100 Ankole cows in exchange for marrying Giorgia Meloni, the Prime Minister of Italy. That comment also sparked widespread reactions and drew attention from international media.
Kainerugaba is the son of Yoweri Museveni, who has ruled Uganda for decades. Because of his position and family background, his statements often attract significant international scrutiny and sometimes create diplomatic ripples.
So far, there has been no official response from the Turkish government regarding the remarks. However, analysts believe such statements could potentially affect diplomatic relations if they escalate further. Experts also point out that in today’s digital age, comments made on social media by influential figures can quickly turn into international issues.
The episode once again highlights how a single set of posts can draw global attention and raise questions about the balance between personal expression and official responsibility in international politics.
